Jose Valverde told reporters Monday that he expects to test the free agent market this offseason.

Valverde has posted a 1.22 ERA and collected 19 saves this season on a struggling Astros squad. He'll be looking for big money this winter. "This is a good team and a good city, too," said the closer. "There are other teams, too, that need closers other than Houston, like Chicago [Cubs]... I have to check the market and see what happens."

Sounds like hes either hinting that he wants to be a Cub or trying to coax the Astros into giving him a big deal.

If his interest was enough that he'd take a major discount (in the $5-7 million range tops), sure. That's very unlikely, though, and otherwise he'll be too expensive.

The only free agent "closers" I'd be in any way interested in would be Soriano and Wagner - and that's only because they may come cheap enough to be of interest.

No to spending money on the bullpen.

Not only that, but Valverde may be the biggest ass in the league. Rooting for him would be painful.

Last year taught me that if I can root for Jim Edmonds, I can root for anyone.

I didn't think I would have a hard time rooting for Edmonds, and I didn't. Valverde's much worse. One day he's going to get a teammate hurt.

I was forced to sit next to valverde the entire series the last time the stro's were in town. It sucked. Not so much because he was a prick, rather because he actually seemed like a pretty cool guy. I'm not supposed to not dislike him.

Why would you have an issue rooting for Edmonds? He's awesome.

Because he was good for the Cards, and then god awful in San Diego. It turned out great, but everyone thought that was a bad pickup at the time. Even you.

After reading Bruce's blog, I have to say I absolutely LOVE that the only reason the Cubs might not do it is how he affects clubhouse chemistry. No worries about the fact that he's terrible. It's not even like Edmonds was good last year!!

He really doesnt sound like he has any interest in giving anyone a disconunt. he sounds like hes tryign to bait both teams into giving him a K Rod, or at least a Fuentes type deal. IMHO, Valverde deserves as much if not more than Fuentes, but I dont know if a closer is our main focus. It would be nice to have him though. Him and Z together would be all kinds of entertaining.

I don't think the original poster's concerns were his ability.

It wasn't his sole concern, but I definitely think that ability was part of it. Ability ended up trumping his previous biases against Edmonds.

I'm afraid they're going to spend on a closer this offseason.

Oh I'm quite sure they'll wind up spending money on all sorts of stupid [expletive].(Eating Bradley's contract, Chone, fixing a bullpen that doesn't need fixing)

Yeah, his likely demands are pretty much why I'd have no interest in him. I'm ok with spending some money on the bullpen, but not $10 million for one pitcher (or, perhaps, even the whole thing).

If I'm the one being referenced here, then Banedon is correct.

Edmonds was my most hated player in all of baseball, and I hated that the Cubs signed him. But he helped us quite a bit and hit some big HR's for us, and I warmed up to him.

So Banedon wasn't correct. He was your most hated player in all of baseball because he was bad for the Padres??

Depending on the price, I wouldn't be opposed to Valverde.

But of course the price will be a major sticking point and I'd rather spend money elsewhere than tie up money to a reliever.
