I don't think we get anything done with the Twins, but the Giants could be interesting. Especially seeing as how they gave up Alderson for Freddy Sanchez. We could be able to swindle a deal for a mid-tier prospect.

ESPN says the Twins were the team who claimed Harden and the Giants claimed Heilmann.

Just let them have him. No need to get anything back for a mediocre pitcher. Just free up a spot for somebody like Stevens.

They got until Monday. There's no reason to let them just have him right now.

Cubs righthander Rich Harden for now is planning for his next start on against Houston on Monday—the same deadline day the Cubs have to decide if they will trade him.

Harden and reliever Aaron Heilman are among several Cubs who have been claimed by unnamed contending teams, though the two pitchers could be the most likely to be acted upon by general manager Jim Hendry.

The waiver and claim process is routinely done on all players in a procedural move surrounding the trade process after July 31. The process is supposed to be done privately, and often players never know they have been involved if their team chooses not to act on a claim.

But with the Cubs playoff hopes dwindling, the two pitchers could bring prospects and players for the future should Hendry and the two unnamed claiming teams reach an agreement on a deal. If no deals are reached by Monday, Hendry could pull back the players or allow them to go without compensation—as the Toronto Blue Jays did with Alex Rios to the White Sox. The Blue Jays wanted to shed Rios’ hefty remaining contract.

Thats 2 less games Heilman can pitch in. Thats reason enough.

yeah i'd like to know how it came out that these two guys (specifically) got claimed and who they got claimed by. every team in baseball is putting numerous players on waivers and many of them are getting claimed. seems pretty bogus that this has leaked.

Oh, thought RedFlash meant Harden. I agree Heilman needs to go now.

Unless the Twins are offering something steller, theres no reason to trade him, especially considering the 2 draft picks we can get if we dont hang on to hiom next year, which Id like to do.

Likely leaks from the teams who claimed them.

just seems like bullcrap that this is happening to the cubs. this team has enough internal problems without this coming out.

It's just guys on waivers, it's not like it's the Kazmir situation.

I don't think it's anything bad, really. Every team puts a ton of their players on waivers every August just to gauge the interest in them. 99% are pulled back. I'm sure the players realize that, and I don't think it bothers them too much. It's just part of the job.

chuck, you honestly thought I would say just Harden go? :D No man, I am in favor of re-signing Harden unless they---the Cubs---can get an offer they can't refuse.

Nothing earth shattering; but here's rotoworld's take...

According to ESPN Chicago, the Twins have entered a waiver claim for Cubs right-hander Rich Harden.

The Twins have until Monday at 1 p.m. EST to spin a trade, but a deal seems highly unlikely. The Cubs are going to demand a major package of prospects and Minnesota management tends to covet its talented youngsters. Harden is 8-7 this season with a 3.99 ERA in 22 starts for the Cubs.

Mlbtraderumors noting that Rosenthal said there might actually be something to the Harden deal because the Twins need to show Mauer and Morneau that they're serious.

There's not much else intriguing to talk about at this point (other than hoping Sorinao's MRI means Fox will play all September), so what could a reasonable package of minor leaguers be?

I know we'd be giving up those potential draft picks for Harden, but why not get two (or more) minor leaguers who've gotten past the draft-pick-bust stage and the bonuses are already paid?

Screw that, the Cubs need to hand on to Harden and re sign him to show their fans that they're for real.

Yes, unless the Twins are giving the Cubs at least 2 of their top prospects they should hold on to Harden and take their chances with arbitration. Even if Harden agreed to arbitration and the Cubs had no intention of keeping him, they could still find a market for him in the offseason.

Rosenthal is spot on regarding his other observation that the pressure here on the Twins is extreme. They really want to keep Morneau and Mauer, and they were getting blasted around the trade deadline for not being more aggressive. The AL Central is a winnable division for them and Harden would go a long way to giving the team a boost down the stretch. People are excited about the possibility of him playing at the Metrodome.

IMO the Cubs hold all of the cards and should squeeze the Twins for everything they can get. After looking at the Twins prospect lists, they seem to be pretty thin at the top.

According to the trib, the Twins expect the Cubs to give them Harden. Let's hope that Hendry sticks to his guns. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-30-cubs-bits-chicago-aug30,0,6799924.story

Even though the Twins would like to have Rich Harden in their rotation and the Cubs are willing to let him go for the right price, it doesn't appear a trade can be worked out before waivers expire at noon Monday.

So it's likely Harden will remain a Cub through this season, and the club will have to decide whether to try to keep him as a free agent, offer him arbitration or just let him go. If he rejects arbitration, the Cubs would get two high draft picks.

from that same article:

The Cubs would like one or two top prospects for Harden, but the Twins believe that is too steep a price without having Harden signed long term. Chances of that happening in the next two days seem unlikely.

They're pretty thin throughout, although they have a few intriguing guys. I'd give some thought to a package built around Revere or Hicks in exchange for Harden.
