Just heard Bernstein on WSCR mention that the rumor is that Ricketts has already been in contact with Sandy Alderson (we knew this) to become the head guy (President I guess?) and that Alderson would be bringing in someone from Boston's front office who works under Theo.

Any idea as to who the said Epstein guy might be?

It makes sense that Ricketts is probably a bright enough guy to be sabermetrically inclined (I guess that's true of a lot of people and the real question is if he actually applies that sort of thinking to sports - obviously plenty of smart people who are dumb sports fans)... he made his fortune in a very numbers/stats driven profession.

I posted about this in the other Ricketts thread but I figured this might warrant its own thread and wouldn't get buried in some of the crap (Coletti LOL) being talked about in that thread.

Sounds interesting. I wouldn't just make a change at GM just to make a change, and it doesn't look like its the case here. Hendry has his faults, and I'd rather have an improvement, but he's also made some good moves during his time. I'd rather not get someone who could potentially be worse than him.

I assume he'd be bringing in one of the more experienced higher-ups in the front office, if this is even true.

Who do we think that might be? Ben Cherington? Jed Hoyer? BILL JAMES?!? (not really)

I know some people that were/are involved in the sale of the Cubs and I was told that Tom Rickett's has a few baseball people in mind that they want to come in and run the club. From there, I only assumed that this "baseball person" would have complete say over the rest of the hirings --GM and Manager. Sandy Alderson sounds like the type of person they would have in mind and in my opinion a solid choice. The problem any of these new hires will have, and it's been discussed quite a bit the last few days in the Chicago papers, is that this team is in a tough position over the next few yrs. because of all of the guaranteed contracts.

Maybe it was my own fatalism, but I just assumed that Hendry would stay on board because of the relative success of the team in the past few years. But I suppose it makes sense that if a guy spends close to $1 billion on a baseball team, he might want to bring in his choice of people to run it.

I don't dislike Hendry as much as a lot of people around here, but I'll obviously take any sort of upgrade.

Thinking about possible changes under Ricketts makes the disappointment that is the 2009 Cubs almost seem close to bearable.

This.

If I stay focused on the fact that Ricketts is going to clean up the front office I might forget how bad this season became at the end.

Listening to Mully and Hanly this morning, they went through every manager possibility from Steve Stone to Ned Colletti, but what got me was to hire a Kenny Williams deciple to run the Cubs more like the White Sox. They said to clean house and bring up a bunch of ex Cubs, like the White Sox do, Sandberg as manager, get Larry Bowa in there, etc. Now if given my choice, Id much rather have the team run like the Red Sox, who have been contenders every year under Epstein as opposed to the White Sox who had 1 great year and a whole lot of mediocrity other than that, in an aful division no less.

The funny part is that Hendry's net contribution to the franchise as a stupidly overpaid scout would be more than his contribution as a stupidly unqualified GM.

On the spectrum of possible GMs, Stone and Ned are quite close and every one between them would suck as much as they do. And the rest of that idea (which I assume was from one of the radio guys) is stupid.

I remember the year Detroit did something like that, bring up a bunch of ex-Tigers to manage the team to put a pretty face on the disappointing team they ran out. That team even managed to win 5 of their last 6 games to avoid setting a record in futility.

I don't understand the fascination some teams/fans have with bringing back former players to manage or coach. It's not like employers in the real world bring back former workers because of fond memories. If you can do the job proficiently, you get the job. Simple as that.

Oh, and Ozzie Guillen sucks. :D)

I wonder if we'll ever see a major league manager who never played pro baseball.

It's been done.

Dave Trembley currently in Baltimore.

They both played in the minors, be it a short time, and thats still considered pro baseball.

I see nothing on Trembley playing in the minors, but I'm almost positive John Boles never played anywhere.
