Fan at Cards-Pirates

A fan in the Pirates-Cards game fell over the rail and was injured tonight. It appeared he also was there with his kid who was impaired.

Is it really bad that I thought Pujols was an amazing human being for staying the entire time, giving the kid a couple pats on the back, and making sure the fan was okay? It made me really like Pujols. AND I HATE PUJOLS!

First time I've ever started to like a guy as a human being yet still hate him as a competitor.

The kid was taken out on the go-cart while the fan was stretchered out with his neck braced. He did give a thumbs up though so hopefully he's okay. I only saw bits and pieces but I think the fan was reaching over on a grounder that was foul down the first base line.

Why hate pujols? Because he's really good?

Why do people still ask this dumb question. Maybe you don't dislike Cardinal players simply because they play for our arch rival but a whole lot of people do.

Well, that's dumb.

Well, now I feel kind of bad for laughing...

Both Pujols and Hill stayed with the man -- a Cardinals fan visiting from New York -- while the medical crew raced onto the field and throughout the entire ordeal. Both also comforted the man's son, who has Down Syndrome and was attending the game for his 21st birthday, according to Pujols.

"Once the medical people got there, I was just scared for his kid," Hill said. "I just leaned around and talked to his kid until somebody else got there because he was scared to death."

...

With his face covered in blood, the fan was eventually put on a stretcher. He gave a thumbs-up signal as he was wheeled off the field and was then taken to nearby Allegheny General Hospital. The man's son left on a cart next to him and, thanks to Pujols, a souvenir in hand.

"Tim [McClelland], the umpire, told me if I can bring a ball out there, for him, and I was like, 'Yeah, yeah,'" Pujols said. "We got him one. It was pretty sad, because he was trying to catch that ball for his son."

Seriously, is there anything Pujols can't do?!

What should they do, root for the guy? I don't hate him, and I doubt anyone here really does. It's not like anyone thinks he's bad guy, because no one here knows him. They just hate seeing him carry a division rival.

Pujols' wife had a kid with Downs before they got married that Pujols has raised as his son. He's done a ton of charity work for Downs in general. Watch a replay and you can see his concern. I think he would have acted relatively the same regardless, but this episode just reinforced my opinion that Pujols is a class act that trumps team rivalries. Hate his stats, but it's silly to hate the man.

al hrabosky made the comment that the injured guy might be a friend of pujols. i think the only reason he guessed that was because of all the work albert does with Down's kids.

dont they usually eject people after they come onto the field, even if its an accident? it would've been funny if he was bleeding but ok and they had to kick him out.

Al did that at first, then later commented how inconvenient this was for Carpenter. Al's kinda a dbag.

The initial post led me to believe that the guy fell over in the stand somewhere onto the walkway in front of his seats or something, or over one of the levels, like a decently sized fall. I had no idea it was over the field barrier a whopping 4 feet onto dirt. That's pathetic. Yeah sure, help the guy out because his face is bleeding, but the douche managed to turn something that probably wouldn't harm a child into a catastrophe. You have to be some kind of stupid to do that.

But kudos to Pujols for being a class act. I respect the guy a lot, this only further cements that respect. But yeah that guy is a dolt. Did he forget he has arms that he could've used to break his fall instead of his face?

haha, fair enough.

I just think the whole "hate him because he's good" thing is kind of middle-school-ish.

I was trying to figure out how old Diedre Pujols is because it seems pretty odd that Pujols could have married a woman who had a child with Down's before he met her and read this

On their very first date at the Cheesecake Factory in Kansas City, where both lived, Albert made a confession. "He told me he had lied about his age," says Deidre.

"He had told me he was 21, but he was really only 18."

Should we go look up your posts on Jim Edmonds?
