does he still have potential as a bullpen arm? i don't know how his stuff has looked.

I only saw the game last night, and he got the living [expletive] beat out of him. He's toast.

I suppose if he calls it quits now, he may enter the HOF along with Maddux and Glavine.

No he wouldn't. He played this season, the other 2 didn't. And I'm not sure Glavine makes it 1st ballot.

With the suckage from last night cut loose, Boston is shutting down the Yankees through 13 tonight. It just goes to show you that cutting the fat makes the beast run faster. If only Hendry would take the same approach for Aaron Miles.

I haven't seen him pitch, but the K:BB ratio looks nice - 33:9 with a 7.4 k/9.

A K/BB of 3.67.

Bob Howry had pretty good numbers last year also: 59:13 (4.54) and a 7.5 K/9.

Sounds like he's just throwing a lot of strikes, still has decent enough stuff to get some K's but because he throws so many strikes and his stuff isn't nearly what it used to be, he leaves a decent number of meatballs over the plate and they're getting hit hard.

Yeah, I don't know what he's got left, but was just pointing out a good K:BB. The rest of the numbers are ugly, though.

300 wins is no longer automatic for HOF voters?

This is so weird.... on the one hand people say what an overrated stat pitcher wins is. However, a lot of those same people will use this as a criteria for HOF induction.

Well, I believe he was referring to the people that vote the players into the hall. Based on that, with Glavine having 300 wins he'll be a first ballot hall of famer due to the people voting him in looking at the 300 wins.

Although what SSR posted doesn't mean it's for sure :-k

how can you not tell the difference, here? anyone can luck into a season where things go right and they win 18 games when they were just average. No one can luck into 300 wins. You win 18 games in a year... so what, so did Russ Ortiz. You win 300 games, you were good.

apparently, the Cubs are among the teams interested:

Strong possibility of landing in Houston

In addition to the Astros, the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers represent the preliminary list of interested National League teams, while the Texas Rangers head the American League list.

I'm sure it was just a formality, but Smoltz did reject a MiLB assignment.

John Smoltz's brief career with the Red Sox is over.

Smoltz has refused the option of an assignment to the minor leagues, leaving the Red Sox with the option of either trading him or releasing him.

A trade is possible because Smoltz has cleared waivers, and the Dodgers are among the teams showing interest. But any deal would require a significant financial component due to the incentives in Smoltz's contract.

And he's been officially released.

Smoltz released

John Smoltz's brief and disappointing stay with the Red Sox has come to its official end.

The Red Sox have confirmed this afternoon that, as expected, they have released the 42-year-old righthander, who won just two of eight starts with the Sox while posting an 8.33 ERA. The news was first reported by FoxSports.com

Smoltz, who won 210 games and saved 154 during a 20-year run with the Atlanta Braves, was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on August 7, the day after allowing eight runs in 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Yankees.

Smoltz will become a free agent Wednesday once he clears release waivers. According to the FoxSports report, a number of teams are interested in Smoltz, among them the Dodgers, Marlins, Cardinals, and Rangers. The report also says that Smoltz "does not intend to retire and is open to joining clubs as a starter or reliever."

Smoltz signed a one-year, $5.5 million with the Red Sox in January after missing most of last season following shoulder surgery. Should he sign with another team, that club will have to pay him only the pro-rated minimum, with the Red Sox picking up the remainder of the deal.

The Red Sox had spoken to Smoltz about returning to the minor leagues to begin working as a reliever, but he decided against that option.

Per STL today writer Joe Strauss' twitter a half hour ago...

Cardinals working on arrangement where Smoltz would come aboard as fifth starter. Smoltz looking beyond this season.

Smoltz may announce decision today. Plenty to suggest he will join Cardinals. DeRosa, Wainwright lobbying heavily. TLR pushing it.

It baffles me why Smoltz insists on being a starter at this point in his career. Im pretty sure based o what he has done he is a HOFer already. So its not like hes trying to get win #250 or 300 for that matter.

Based on Gregg's outing today we'd be crazy not to be interested. But Id actually rather we claim a real closer off waivers if they are available.
