Forget Halladay and Peavy

From Ben Maller at Foxsports:

Mariners might trade Felix Hernandez in offseason?

Felix Hernandez, P, Mariners - An American League assistant GM said of his team's pitch to Seattle for its young ace: "[GM] Jack [Zduriencik] listened but in the end he knew he couldn't possibly get enough to trade one of the best young pitchers in the game.'' The Mariners fear they will not be able to sign him long term and are starting to put out feelers. -- Boston Globe .....Ben's Take: Hernandez will end up with the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Angels or Cubs.

Can you imagine the package it would take to get him.

He just named as many big market, high spending teams as he could think of.

It would probably take and i wouldn't mind parting with it:

Vitters, Marmol, Shark, Wells, Fox and possibly Jay Jackson and maybe even Cashner. I would trade that for felix.

i wouldn't

trading a potential ace pitcher (who is 23 years old) is just about the worst way to start a rebuilding process

Unless you believe it will take 3 years before you can even win. Still if they trade him, they have no business resigning Washburn in the offseason. Hell trade Ichiro 1st.

Whats there payroll at anyways?

does seattle not have a good farm system?

the kid is freaking 23...how much longer do they have him under control!?

It looks like 2 more seasons after this one through 2011.

Seattle has been trying to buy out Felix's arbitration years and has been unsuccessful. I'm not surprised they are getting a little skittish about re-signing him when he becomes a free agent. It makes sense for them to be proactive and trade him in the offseason when he's still 2 years away when they can get max value for him.

I think we should make a run at Felix this winter, but I don't think we would have to give up Vitters to get him. Obviously a good amount of players/prospects would be headed to Seattle, but they aren't going to necessarily demand the number one guy.

yeah they are.

They don't have Washburn anymore to re-sign. They traded him to the Tigers last week.

IIRC, there was a comment in the newspapers that said they intended to re-sign him after he becomes a free agent.

I hadn't seen that; it's certainly possible. I wonder if making a public comment like that right after trading him would be tampering, though. It could make one wonder if they had a gentlemen's agreement with him before trading him.

I think Seattle would be smart to trade him if they could get two top notch starting pitchers and another two potential major leaguers who are under team control for 3+ years each.

Felix Hernandez has more value to the Cubs than Jake Peavy would have had since he is still cheap and can probably be signed long-term like Peavy, but at a lower rate (since it will be more incremental through his "arbitration years").

I think Seattle would ask the Cubs for something like this:

(1) Josh Vitters

(2) Andrew Cashner

(3) Jay Jackson

(4) Hak-Ju Lee or Starlin Castro

(5) A minor league relief pitcher

I would hope the Cubs would consider this:

(1) Josh Vitters or Andrew Cashner (but not both)

(2) Jay Jackson

(3) Starlin Castro

(4) two of our highly regarded relief pitchers (e.g. Gaub, Parker, Maestri, Stevens)

Kurkjian noted that Washburn enjoys Seattle, and speculated he could re-sign with the Mariners in the offseason.

There were lots of articles like that one - I'm not sure anything was said by Seattle management directly.

I know it's great to dream big about trading for King Felix, but it's not very realistic IMO. I would think it would be more realistic if we let Harden go (or if we keep him sign him cheaply) and sign Lackey to a Lowe/Lilly/Meche type contract.

Lackey is the "ace" of the Angels. i can't imagine him coming cheap

4/48 or 5/55-60 isn't that "cheap" and he hasn't been a ace the last 2 years, he's been closer to a #2 than an ace. He's been hurt both years and has been off and on, especially this year. But I am still a big fan when he is pitching to his abilities, like he has been over the last month or so. But I agree with you that he will have the perception this offseason of being the Angels ace the last 3-5 years and someone will probably offer him a 5-6 year deal for 13+ mil. a year.

I don't know about some of you guys, but I really want to see Vitters make come up and rake in a Cubs uniform.

I also don't think we are winning a championship for a few years, so I wouldn't mortgage that much future just for King Felix. However, that is most certainly only one man's opinion.
