I suppose the Washburn trade is bad news for the White Sox. The Tigers already have a very good 1-2, and a decent 3 in Porcello, but have not had great luck with the back end of the rotation, so adding a number 3 caliber starter is pretty big for them.

Have 3 guys in the Top 7 in ERA.

Great trade for them, and they might be after Luke Scott.

Mariners Rejected Offers For Felix Hernandez

By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 11:14am CST]

The Mariners rejected offers from six different teams for young pitcher Felix Hernandez, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark and Peter Gammons. GM Jack Zduriencik admitted he listened, but didn't find anything even worth discussing.

Im willing to bet that the Brewers were 1 of the teams. Id very much not like the the Brewers to get King Felix.

What would the Brewers offer? Escobar and Gamel are both untouchable, and I can't see the Mariners trading Felix without at least those two included in the deal.

I don't understand why Seattle would even want to trade Felix. They still have him under control for a couple more years and he is a starter that a team can be built around. They also appear to have something going as they move forward.

They'll trade Felix...if overwhelmed with an offer. Just like almost every other player in the game.

If the Seattle GM is sending read receipts on emails with "Trade" and "Felix" in the same header, you have to take a stab. Just in case it's Christmas in July. Not doing so is the kind of thing we want to burn an effigy of Hendry for. I'm not surprised that 6 tried, and it isn't really news. The job of a MLB General Manager is to basically be a professional poker player. To always see every hand out...and try not to be too obvious on the bluff.

I love watching the Trade Deadline.

Same here, almost. I'm always stuck at work every deadline afternoon...and I'm impatient. I purposely stash work away just so I have something to distract myself with. Other than refreshing various sites again. And again. And again....

The writers suggest the Bucs will listen on pitchers Paul Maholm, Zach Duke, and Matt Capps, but are not shopping them.

I wonder how much mored wed have had to give them to get Duke or Maholm instead of Gorz. Would Jay Jackson have been worth it for 1 of those 2?

I dunno. You gotta figure acquiring Hernandez would require a massive overpay.

If someone in our division wants to be in the habit of making trades that are lopsided in the other team's favor, then let them, I say.

Twins Acquire Orlando Cabrera

By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 12:08pm CST]

12:08pm: Yahoo's Tim Brown said it was a done deal, with the Twins sending shortstop prospect Tyler Ladenorf to Oakland for Cabrera.

Cabrera, 34, is hitting .280/.318/.365 on the season in 448 plate appearances. He has $1.75MM remaining on his contract, once you factor in a $250K bonus for being dealt. Though he profiles as a Type A free agent after the season, Cabrera's agent wisely negotiated a clause disallowing his club to offer arbitration. So, no draft picks for the team for the loss and no impediment to signing Cabrera from the player's point of view.

Adrian Gonzalez Rumors: Friday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 31 at 12:26pm CST]

12:26pm: A Jayson Stark source says the asking price for Gonzalez is "astronomical, three times the asking price on Halladay."

12:04pm: SI's Jon Heyman hears the Red Sox are still in talks for Gonzalez. Buchholz, Lowrie, and Masterson are "in the mix" with the Padres asking for Westmoreland and Anderson. Heyman adds, "However, the sides are still pretty far apart, and Boston is still in the mix for Martinez."

If the Cubs make any more moves, I'm sure I'll be pissed about it.

They've been most linked to a lefty reliever, which they got.

The only other thing they've been linked to is a platoon partner for Bradley, which I don't want at all.

We don't have the money to take on a big bat, so unless the team adds a backup catcher, I don't think any move they make would please me at all.

Hill is a better backup catcher than any other backups that are available.
