The options weren't play Chris Duncan in LF or play with 8 players. If they wanted to open up a spot they didn't need to trade Duncan, they just needed to stop playing him everyday. The fact that they got a piece of [expletive] like Lugo is even worse than if they just outright released Duncan.

This. Duncan wasn't blocking anybody, unless this was some lame attempt to prevent Daddy Duncan from crying because his son would be riding the bench (which he will be in Boston, no doubt).

If the Cards wanted to acquire another OF, all that had to be done was to bench him.

Schumaker and DeRo are primarily 2nd basemen and they'd likely prefer Glaus at third if possible. That leaves Ankiel, Ludwick, Rasmus and Stavinoah as the primary OFs. Acquiring Dunn/Holliday and dealing Duncan leaves them with 5 OFs after the trades are made.

Not happening. He can't throw a baseball from 3rd to first. I'm not sure how they think he's going to play the OF with his shoulder as bad as it still is.

Also, as somebody else said, Dero is going to be playing 3rd every day.

Thanks, I didn't realize that. If he can't throw from third then he likely can't throw from the outfield either, as you said. So in that case, I don't think you can count him as outfield depth - leaving DeRosa as the third baseman and Schumaker as the second baseman.

I am pretty sure I read a direct quote from the Nationals' GM stating that Dunn will not be traded.

From 7/8:

Adam Dunn will not be traded before the July 31 Trade Deadline, Nationals acting general manager Mike Rizzo said in a radio interview on Tuesday. "We are not trading Adam Dunn," Rizzo said during an appearance on ESPN 980 in Washington, D.C. ...

They're stupid. Let's not trade a guy who a) won't be here after next year and b) won't help us win a championship because our pitching is terrible even though he is their best trading chip and would likely bring in at least one top pitching prospect, maybe even an extra mid level prospect as well.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

ESPN baseball writer Buster Olney writes:

The St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics have been talking about a possible swap of All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday and top prospect Brett Wallace, according to sources, and one person familiar with the talks places the odds of a deal at 50-50.

They can still trade him next year. They might also draw more than 10,000 fans a game the rest of the season this way.

Were talking about a team whose on track to blow 2 top 3 draft picks in 2 years. That entire franchise just needs to be liquidated for its own good.

This is true, but his trade value has never been higher than it is now. His AVG isn't atrocious and his production numbers are fantastic, combined with the fact that he'll be under a teams control for an extra year, he should be traded now. If they trade him at the deadline next year, they get a couple mid level guys for him instead of a top tier guy that they can get now.

I want to punch the Nationals in the face

Duncan wasn't even on the MLB roster when he was dealt, trading him didn't open up any space in the outfield or even on the roster.

I'm also really amused that the Nationals scout was at Tuesday's Memphis game, a rainout.

He has some issues out there...

we know. we also know that he more than makes up for it with his bat.

Who's going to give up good young pitching for Adam Dunn? THis offseason MLB GMs practically blackballed him because he can't play much defense. To put things in perspective, would you be ok with the Cubs trading Marshall, J. Jackson and someone else (Cashner) for Dunn? Probably not.

That worked out so well for Hendry.

Note that it wasn't just Hendry who did that, which should once again give you an idea that the parade of GM medocrity at best for the Cubs is all but guarenteed to continue once he is gone. Most GM's are not terribly good at their job and the ones that are better than just being tolerable are few and far between.

im so sick of the cards doing what is needed to be done to make a run deep into the playoffs while the cubs trade and get rid of most of a team that won 97 games the year before

just for comparison

Dunn is hitting

25 points higher

18 more HR's

43 more RBI's

196 OPS points higher

and 25 obp points higher than our prized off season piece of crap

I think it's quite clear that Jim Bowden was the best GM in baseball.

They're doing what it takes to get their foot in the door, but I dont know about a deep run. The Dodgers and Phillies are still the teams to beat, and while a deal for Holliday could cement the Cards as the division favorite, thats really all it does for them.

I knew it was bad, but 25 AVG points (it's DUNN) and 18 HR? Wow.

An offensive starved team like the Giants. Pablo Sandoval's OPS+ is 140. The next highest on that team is Aaron Rowand at 102... Dunn's currently is sitting at 150. He would instantly be the most productive hitter on that team, and a 1-2 of Sandoval and Dunn looks nice. The Giants have the pitching to be able to make it to the postseason, they don't have the offense. Dunn should look like gold to them, and they probably would be able to part with just one top pitcher for Dunn (i.e. Alderson), not several mid-level types. The Giants have Bumgarner in the wings with him. Sure a 1-4 of Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, and Alderson looks sick in the future, but a 1-3 without Alderson can do them just fine, and the Nats need good young pitching, and the Giants can afford to part with some (or one). Dunn isn't worth a whole crop of pitchers, but I do believe he's worth one very good one (and maybe a couple of toss-ins), especially when he'll still be under control for another year, albeit at $12 million, but that's still below the average salary of players who are OPS'ing around the same numbers for what he is right now.

The Giants need a power bat. The Nats need young pitching. It's a no-brainer.
