If you had to face a MLB pitcher... with a chance to win $1 million if you could get a hit, would you not choose Moyer?

no base on balls or dropped third strikes. respect the game.

Kyle Farnsworth or Livan Hernandez.

Not a chance you could catch up to Farnsworth's stuff. If you're vying for a walk, that's a different story. But I seriously doubt anyone here could catch up to a 102MPH heater.

Hasn't touched 100 all year, hovers around 95.

you guys are babies

give me lincecum

I prefer Verlander.

I know alot of guys on this site would take the "easy way out" and chose a soft tosser, but come on "man up" and chose a tougher assignment. I'd go with Verlander.

Man up? Please. All you're going to do is embarrass yourself. I imagine he'd get 2 strikes on you and then bounce a curve ball about 50 feet and you'd flail away like you had a shovel in your hand.

Come on, my friend, I rather try and fail against a major league pitcher (which I wouldn't BTW), then try and succeed against a guy who should be playing slow-pitch softball at 45 plus yrs young.

The best chance any of us would have would be against a guy like Farnsworth, provided he throws that straight arrow fastball. Anyone with a respectable amount of hand-eye can gear up for a no-break fastball if they are allowed to prepare. It is the breaking/off speed stuff (not just that it is hard to hit, but that it sets up the fastball and vice versa) that is the problem.

Im pretty sure that 99% of all message boards on the internet could not hit a straight as an arrow 100 mph fastbal even if you were told the exact location the pitch was going to be thrown. People just dont realize how quick a bat you have to have to catch up to 100 mph.

Plus there's the instinctive reaction of stepping away from a projectile that's thrown close to you at 100 MPH. And like you said, that ball is in the catcher's glove before you even get the batt off your shoulder.

If and when he gets back in the league, Neal Musser.

He was my junior high basketball coach and played ball at the same high school I attended. I would give him some financial incentive to give me a meatball.

Any going with the "man-up" theory is pretty stupid.

a.) there is a million dollars on the line

b.) you aren't going to hit Verlander or Lincecum or probably 99.875% of pitchers

c.) there is a million dollars on the line

nonsense...if i know where the ball is going to be i'm going to hit it given 3 chances.

I doubt that. You would know you were going to do this and train for a bit. If you go to a pitching machine you can jack it up to 100-105 and still make contact. It's when the damn ball spins or changes levels where we all get seperated from baseball players.

If you assume that 99% of all message board posters on the internet have little to no baseball ability...which I guess is a safe bet. Straight as an arrow 100 mph fastballs, more than a handful of guys here could make contact.

A pitching machine is going to put the ball where you want it though. Not all strikes are easily hittable. On top of that, while it is much easier to hit a straight fastball than a breaking ball, it's not like everyone has the athletic ability to make consistent contact. I've seen plenty of guys at try-outs for amateur leagues show up and not be able to make contact with a batting practice fastball, let alone one reaching triple digits in speed.

99% is a bit high. The majority, however, would struggle to make contact.

Edit: I didn't notice his statement about being told the exact location of the pitch being thrown. If you knew the speed and location, that obviously increases your chances of success by quite a bit.

Sure, they would make contact. None of them would get a hit though. No way. Pop ups and groundouts.

You make contact, there's a chance you could dump it somewhere in-between fielders. Doesn't need to be solid contact to drop in for a hit. I'm not saying the chances are great, but there's certainly a chance.

I stepped in a batting cage not to long ago that was tossing something like 88-92 mph heaters and I hit them with no problem... that being said, if a real person were to be throwing them it'd be much more difficult since the machine throws them in the exact same spot almost every time whereas there's always a chance for wildness against a person.

I've always thought I could hit Randy Johnson. I'm sure I'd fail miserably, but I'd like to give it a shot

That would make you a better hitter than anyone on the Cubs.

I still dont think you realize the bat speed you need to get around on a 100mph fastball. I supposed if you know the exact location the pitch is going to be you can swing while the pitcher is about to release and then maybe you could hit a 100 mph fastball. If your told the location though and you still try and time it out of the pitchers hand I doubt any of you catch up to it.

If you know it's coming, you just cheat and start your swing early. And if you get much of the bat on it, you have a decent shot at getting a hit. You can't cheat on a sweeping slider or hammer curveball.

I played against guys in HS who could bring it at 90+, but they usually had no other pitches. I could hit them (at least make solid contact). Hell, at that velo you don't have to take a full swing - just choke up a bit and try your best to "catch" the ball with the barrel of the bat.

I was lost against anything with decent movement or contrasting speeds.

If the fastball has good (just about any) movement, then yeah, that's a different story.

EDIT: of course, this is assuming you have a respectable level of hand/eye coordination.

For that reason, I would pick a two-pitch pitcher like Harden. Sit on his fastball, and let his change-up, assuming I can pick it up, go by.
