There's a reason pitchers with no hitting ability whatsoever still hit like .050.

The strike zone's not that big. If you cheat like crazy, you can time any fastball. And if you time it, there's a chance it'll just happen to hit the bat. And if it does that, you've got a chance it'll go somewhere where you can get a hit.

Line up 100 random nsbbers, and I bet at least one of us would get a hit.

those pitchers were probably among the better hitters on their high school teams. and they have a lot more athletic ability than any of us.

Mike Lincoln is probably the worst pitcher in the majors right now so I'd choose him. Hitters are slugging .663 against him in 23 innings. I think he throws in the mid 80s but of course his breaking balls hang all the time so I might see some 75 MPH meatballs.

I still dont think you realize the bat speed you need to get around on a 100mph fastball. I supposed if you know the exact location the pitch is going to be you can swing while the pitcher is about to release and then maybe you could hit a 100 mph fastball. If your told the location though and you still try and time it out of the pitchers hand I doubt any of you catch up to it.

If you know it's coming, you just cheat and start your swing early. And if you get much of the bat on it, you have a decent shot at getting a hit. You can't cheat on a sweeping slider or hammer curveball.

I played against guys in HS who could bring it at 90+, but they usually had no other pitches. I could hit them (at least make solid contact). Hell, at that velo you don't have to take a full swing - just choke up a bit and try your best to "catch" the ball with the barrel of the bat.

I was lost against anything with decent movement or contrasting speeds.

If the fastball has good (just about any) movement, then yeah, that's a different story.

EDIT: of course, this is assuming you have a respectable level of hand/eye coordination.

I've played against kids who are in the pro's now. Faced a few kids who throw low 90s. Theres a huge difference between 90 and 80 mph. Now think of the difference it is from 90 to 100 mph. Maybe one or two or a few people on this forum played minor league ball or college ball might be able to get a hit off that. Besides for that the rest of this message board has about 0 shot. I had some small college looks, played on a very good high school team that won state. I doubt theres any chance i'd catch up to 100 mph fastball.

I think there probably is.

Say what you will, if I get to warm up against mid-90's pitches, and the pitcher then throws me laser straight 100 mph fastballs right down the middle (which would never happen in game action anyway), and I know they're coming and where they'll be, I'll get around on one.

I faced guys who threw in the 90's in HS, and for chuckles we used to crank the pinching machine to max velo (which was mid-90's) and ofter a couple of minutes you could time that. And I wasn't even a good hitter.

I don't care how hard you throw, if it has no movement, you can't paint the corners with it and you have no other pitches to mix in, you'll get hit, even by mediocre hitters.

This is very true, but being that stepping in against a major league pitcher at all is almost a once in a lifetime opportunity I'd pick someone like Marshall just so I could get to see the sweeping curve. And if he throws a fastball I think I can hit it at 88 MPH.
