I'm all for the BJ Ryan signing, but I would love to see the Cubs go after Sean Burnett of the Nationals. His numbers this year have been great, but past numbers suggest that he should be used as a Loogy. He's only 26 years old and making $415,000. Maybe Hart alone or with a lower prospect might get the trade done. If Ryan is reasonably successful, adding Burnett would allow Marshall to be available for the Harden/Dempster drama.

I don't think they'd trade him for Hart. Like you said, he's been good and he's only making $415k. He's not FA eligible either, unless I'm mistaken. The only reason they have to move him by the deadline is if they got more for him than they could get in the offseason. Of course, if I'm wrong on the FA eligible part, then that changes the picture. I still think he could get more than Hart.

Between Ryan, Fossum, and Gaub, I think we can find a loogy. We have limited trade assets and money, so Id rather go for offense. If only Aaron Hill was available.

While I agree that I would like to upgrade the offense, there aren't many options out there. As others have pointed out, 2B is where we would have to look. The real upgrade would be Sanchez, but it looks like Hendry is in a financial crunch. The only real hope the Cubs have is that the players they have (Bradley, Soriano, Soto, Fukudome, Fontenot/Baker) start producing.

I'm sure we could get Aaron Hill, just have to take back either Vernon Wells or Alexis Rios.

Id take Rios if theyd take one of our outfielders.

They won't they are dumping contracts.

That would make things way too easy. They're salary dumping. They won't take any of our guys.

so if he's performing great and is cheap, why would the nationals give him to us for our crap?

He was performing and cheap with the Pirates when they traded him. I'm thinking the Nationals need so much that an offer of Hart plus a lower prospect might give them a young, cheap pitcher who can start or relieve plus a prospect.

Kevin Hart for Sean Burnett would be awful.

Not if you need a loogy in the bullpen and Hart doesn't really fit into your team's plans.

If you think you need a loogy to the point where you trade a better pitcher to get one, then it's still overpaying and a bad mistake. It's nice to get a balance of lefties and righties, but what's more important is getting the best player.

I suppose Hart for Burnett wouldnt be the worst thing in the world, as thats the best thing we could get for him alone, however, he could also be very enticing to a team as a throw in in a larger deal, as he is a major league ready guy who can start or pitch out of the pen.

There is nothing "very enticing" about Kevin Hart. He's not worthless, but every organization has their own Kevin Hart or 4 Kevin Harts that mean they aren't giddy to receive him in a trade. Kevin Hart and his ilk will always have more value to the team that currently has him than a team that would potentially acquire him.

I've heard the Nationals do not have to move money thus they don't have to trade anybody.

And why should they? Their offense is solid enough, and depending on how far a way Strasburg is from making an impact in the majors, they could just be a few mid rotation starters and a few solid relievers away from a major league baseball team.

Which is why I found it funny how pundits would say certain players on the Nationals could be had for trade...Get that team some good pitching, and they can compete with the other teams in the divisions.

A lot of people see a bad team with good players and automatcally assume that they want to give these players up for the first offer. While this may be true with teams looking to shed pay roll, if money isnt the issue for the Nats, theres no reason to trade these guys.

If they have vets in the final year of their contract who they don't plan on bringing back, it makes sense to trade them. Or if they could get a massive package back for someone like Adam Dunn, that would make some sense.

Otherwise, you're right I think, a firesale is unlikely for the Nationals.
