Why does anyone pitch to Pujols ? His OPS is nearly .400 higher than anyone on the Cardinals. All he does is damage the baseball.

If I am the opposing manager/pitcher, I wouldn't mess around with Pujols if there are runners on base or if he can affect the outcome of the game in any way.

Hypothetical situation; Cubs up one run, Gregg on the mound, runner at first. Pujols is at bat, Ludwick on deck. Would you walk Pujols ?

Yes.

Slowly but surely, he is starting to get the Bonds treatment. He set a career high in walks last year with 104. 34 of them were intentional. He's already halfway to that point with 52 walks and of those 52, 22 of them are intentional, and we still haven't reached the midpoint of the season yet. He is getting the Bonds treatment, just not on such a grand scale yet. There are still hitters in that lineup that pose some sort of threat, albeit a much smaller one than Pujols does, but Bonds had absolutely nothing protecting him. There was no reason to pitch to him then. But yeah, Pujols is probably going to top 120 BB's this year and probably 50 IBB as well. I would imagine it will be more than that next year, too.

The Bonds treatment as in how big his body has gotten the last few years and how quickly he bounces back from injury? I say Yes.

There is no one today that should be walked every time up...the best will fail 2 of 3 times. But there are certain game situations where caution should be used. Albert and a few others should be walked w/1st base open. Other times the pitcher should man up and go for the out.

Man up? Really?

There are lots and lots of situations where I'd be just find with walking Pujols. Not as much as I would have bonds a few years ago, but as others have said, it's quickly approaching that.

Case in point: Right now in the mets/cards game. There is one out, a runner on first, and Pujols is up. The mets are up by 1. I would seriously consider walking him here. I'd much rather face ludwick.

and he grounded into a DP. lol.

Exactly. If he hits anything on the ground it's an instant DP. And it may come as a surprize that Albert is not the Cards' best clutch hitter....that would be Molina.

Went to the Cards/Royals game on Fathers Day on Sunday, and my dad wondered why nobody walks him anymore.

Grand Slam hit.

Solo shot hit.

Not exactly the best of shots, but I was in the upperdeck at the K, so I thought it was decent, despite being way up there in the View Level Infield section.

It would definitely be a surprise since it's not even remotely close to being true.

And hey what do you know? Average those out and you get pretty much the same ops as his overall season, not too far off from his career ops.

Oh my god I didn't realize he was on that kind of a pace. Sosa's 2001 was just ridiculous.
