Cubs Monitor Market, Unsure Of Team Needs

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 19 at 9:06am CST]

Cubs GM Jim Hendry is working the trade market as hard as ever, though he doesn't yet know what his team will need in July, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Hendry wants to see what kind of production he gets once Aramis Ramirez returns. Until then, he's counting on the group he assembled to play better. At this point, Hendry doesn't know what kind of players he'll try to add:

"For me to say either way in the middle of June makes no sense," he said. "We could be in the market for a player we never even dreamed of a month from now ... You just kind of stay on top of it every day and react to what you may need."

The Cubs are 31-31, fourth in the NL Central, but just 4.0 games behind the Brewers.

The time of need is now, and the need is a 2B or 3B who knows how to use a baseball bat.

Basically said what we already knew: He's not going to overpay out of desperation for a temperary replacement for ARam and he's always on the phone monitoring what's available to help the team. As long as the Cubs stay close, he's going to wait for ARam's return to assess the team's needs and respond to other team's acquistions.

The only thing that will save this team is Doc Brown's flying DeLorean to time-travel back before Hendry made most of these horrible decisions. 88 miles per hour!

I think the biggest need is at 2B. I no longer believe Fontenot is an everyday player, but he can still be a productive player. (Moving Fontenot back to his role as lefty half of a platoon/good bat off the bench would benefit both Fontenot and the Cubs). Excluding the former Cub who is beloved, why not try for a player like Freddy Sanchez, Clint Barmes or even Felipe Lopez? I know none of the three are impact bats, but are solid enough to make the offense better.

Mark Teahen would be the closest thing to a replacement for DeRosa. If we could throw enough prospects at the Royals, we should be able to get him. I know hes been linked in rumors to the Cubs for the past few years now, but I dont know how serious any of it was.

I've been suggesting for awhile that we use some of the prospects we were saving for Peavy (not needed) and go after Sanchez, Cantu, or Teahen. All of these players would be very good replacements for ARam and all of them can then slide over to 2B when he returns. Also, Fontenot might be a decent trade chip. The only problem is that this shoots down the "need more LH bats in the lineup" theory.

We really don't need a "replacement" for Derosa, but a player who is immensely more productive then Aaron "blippin'" Miles.

As I've said before, I'm completely on the Mark Teahan bandwagon if it wouldn't take a king's ransom to acquire him.

I mention this in another thread, but 1 of

Jeff Stevens

Kevin Hart

Mitch Atkins

Randy Wells(preferably not Wells)

plus 2 of

Darwin Barney

Josh Harrison

Kyler Burke

Sam Fuld

Steve Clevenger

Rebel Ridling

Ryan Flaherty

could get the deal done. I suppose if we want be more agressive we could offer up Tony Thomas or Tyler Colvin.

This team + Aramis Ramirez and Mark Teahen does not equal 2009 World Series champs.

But THIS team getting Aramis Ramirez and Teahen, while jumpstarting the offenses of Soriano and Soto might...

With Ramirez out and Soriano doing the hop, the Cubs are down about $35M in normal production. If Soriano turns it around soon, and Aramis comes back healthy and productive, it will be like getting 2 deadline guys to help the team.

The problem hasn't been NOT having the bats, it has been that our routinely GOOD bats have been quite bad...

Get some bullpen help and a utility infield guy that's WORTH A DAMN.

Id prefer this team+Aramis and DeRosa, but once Ramirez returns, and if the rest of these guys can start heating up, there is a very good chance that we make it to the end game. Teahen would simply be a nice puzzle piece, and possible start at 2nd once Ramirez is back.

Not that I expect a reasonable answer out of you, but what teams have a chance at being world series champs?

I'm not sure what it would take to get Teahen, because as I posted earlier nobody knows what value GMs place on a certain player or prospects they might get in return. I do know that Teahen would be a good role player on a contending team while being a versatile, moderately paid player on a non-contender. He is not the all-star some posters are making him out to be. He underproduces for his 2 major positions (3B and RF - 90% of his games), but remains a solid option because of his versatility. My 3-way trade proposal filled the Royals' glaring need (SS), but obviously we can't provide any prospects that would fill that void.

I am reasonable. It's hard to tell before the trade deadline. But this team doesn't look like is all it needs is Ramirez and Mark .757 OPS Teahen to win the World Series. Can he even play 2b competently?

According to espn he's only played 3 games at 2b... for a total of 23 innings. He didn't make any errors... but that's still not much experience.

And... I don't know if we should be trading for someone to replace ARam temporarily, just so they can sit on the bench when he returns. If it was someone that could move over to second, then it might make sense.

Victor Martinez for Soto and Marshall. Yea or Nay?

I'd definitely do it. But would Cleveland?

Also, money would likely be a hang up. Martinez is making $5.7 million this year with a club option for $7 million next year. Could we afford him?

I don't trade Soto now. His value is at its lowest. the league has adjusted to him. He's actually doing better right now than I expected. I think over the rest of the year he makes adjustments of his own, and carries his significant weight.

Now is not the time to trade him.

Victor Martinez is what Soto could become, though. Plus, there's no certainty that Soto will turn it on. As I said, the pay raise from Soto to Martinez would be an issue, but if we can afford the raise, it'd be worth it if Soto doesn't drastically improve.

Absolutely not. This is a team in dire need of cheap players, Soto is making the minimum(or close to it) and we have control over for the next 4 years for a guy that has been talked about moving out of catcher for the past 2 years.
