Fairly certain that I read that Campbell is being shopped. This makes sense.

Anybody taking him wouldn't make sense. He's got a huge contract.

can we toss someone some money to take him (a lot of money)?

i dont know how nhl deals work too well.

but I think Versteeg + Campbell + money would definitely be intriguing to some teams

Havlat is gone, 6 years and 30 mil to the Wild.

Damn. He's a good player.

Yes he is, but considering he has taken potshots at the Hawks management (rightfully or not is besides the point) on his twitter account makes him sound bitter.

Good luck in Minny, Marty.

Well no ones yet to be able to snag heatley, so theres still a chance we can revisit the campbell +?? for heatley deal. I'd love to not have to give up versteeg, but it might be worth it to get out from under the campbell deal.

Perhaps Tanguay will sign a reasonable one year deal to prove hes healthy? We have a good chunk of $ to work with this offseason, but it'll be gone next year.

Id love to sign a big man who can clear the front of the net (we'll desperately need that with Huet). Hal Gill would be perfect. Failing that, Barker needs to step up big time.

It'd be awesome to do all of the above (admittedly, asking for Tanguay is getting wing greedy), and I dont think its too implausible.

I'm torn here.

On the one hand, I love Hossa. Hossa is a big step up from Havlat (and that's not a dig on Havlat), and I know Detroit wanted him.

But we didn't need another winger. We need a top-notch center. The one we got is decent, but not what we really needed.

I think you underestimate the value the hawks place on their centers' defensive ability, case in point, dealing for pahlsson last year, signing bolland, signing madden. The Hawks are content going plus offensive on the wings, minus offense on center.

The Hawks had a hell of a day today. In my mind, they have to be the favorites to win the West next year.

I'm going to miss Marty a lot, but Hossa's an unreal talent. I was shocked to hear that we signed him this afternoon. Kopecky and Madden are solid players as well.

Next year is going to be another fun year. I think the Hawks have a plan of attack for next year's RFA's, so I'm really not too worried about that. Of course dumping Campbell would be nice, but I don't really see how they're going to be able to do that.

Heatley has a larger contract than campbell. He also has a no trade clause that he has used twice in the last two days to nix trades.

I've only seen him nixed a trade to Edmonton, but who else has he nixed a trade to?

Already been said but Hossa is an upgrade over Havlat. Mainly for injury reasons. Good signing for Hawks

As a Wings fan I have to say, Thanks for taking Kopecky!!

first, hal gill is awful.

second, he signed with the habs.

Wow, with all that went on, I missed the Gill signing. Heres the thing though, its not that Gill is such a great player, he isn't (I see him as a bit of a better version of Barker). Its that he would fit in a lot better on the team than an undersized offensive minded d-man when you have a goalie that is going to be giving up a sweet rebound right in the crease on nearly every shot.

I don't give a crap to have all defensemen who can skate and pass well if the puck is going to wind up in the back of our net after every rebound.

cash isn't exchanged in NHL deals. the only way they'd get rid of him would be to take on a different bad contract. and that kind of defeats the purpose.

Unless the bad contracts are bad for different reasons. The Hawks have cap space to burn this season, there are some teams that are pretty tight to the cap. If they could swing a deal for guys on shorter contracts it could work in both teams favor.

ESPN's people seem to believe the deal is pretty good. CNNSI's does not.

The SI guy seems focused on the length, and the situations with Toews, Kane and Keith. From what I can tell, the length works out great by reducing the cap hit, which basically makes it easier to resign those guys. They were never going to just be a team led by those three. They had to have other impact players. A top notch winger at a $5.2m cap hit is very beneficial. When you compare it to Patrick Sharp at 3.9, I'd say the Hossa hit is much more fair, for what he brings to the table. And the length thing isn't that big of a deal. I don't see him playing 12 years. There will be incentive for him to retire toward the end. But if he doesn't, they will have flexibility to do stuff with him. If he was making $7m per year for the life, yes, that would be an issue, but he's not.

For some reason I was thinking Campbell's contract was in the mid 6 range.

Also for red

The first day of NHL free agency ended the way it began. Like he did on Tuesday, disgruntled Senators forward declined to waive his no-movement clause by midnight eastern on Wednesday in order to facilitate a trade to the Edmonton Oilers. The Senators are now on the hook for the $4 million signing bonus to Heatley.

I forgive him. He knew he had a pretty good thing going in Chicago, and chances were he would wind up in a less attractive position. He should probably have kept his mouth shut, but I have no hard feelings.

any news on re-signing Nash?

The Columbus Blue Jackets and captain Rick Nash appear to be further apart in their contract negotiations than either side would have expected.

According to a report in the Columbus Dispatch, the club and winger, who can become a free agent at the end of the 2009-10 season met on Wednesday night and the Blue Jackets' offer fell well short of what Nash and his agent, Joe Resnick, were expecting.

"Things didn't line up the way I anticipated them lining up," Nash told the Dispatch. "I thought we had a solid chance of getting (a contract) done, especially with all the interest they said they had going into this.

"If this doesn't happen in the next week, and we can't hit a number where we're both satisfied and we both feel it's fair … if they want me that bad, they'll get it done."

The Dispatch speculates that the club came forward with a five-year deal, which was unacceptable to the 25-year old Nash.

"There were tons of teams throwing some pretty big money around (Wednesday)," Nash said. "If this doesn't get done, I'm sure I won't have a problem getting signed by somebody next summer."

Sources tell TSN the NHL and the NHLPA are investigating what might have been an enormous mistake by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago tendered qualifying offers to several key players this week, including Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, however the investigation underway is to determiner whether the qualifying offers were filed correctly.

If not, there is the remote possibility the qualifying offers could be ruled invalid and the players listed above, conceivably, could be deemed unrestricted free agents because of the blunder.
