He barely even argued the blown call at 3rd either. Actually, he was smiling and joking around with Sanchez. WTF is that?

I thought we were going to see a flashback to 07 when he blew his top on a third base call. But no.

That was unbelievable. Would it kill someone on this team to show some fire?

Z should start punching people in the dugout. I nominate Cotts, Patton, Miles, Heilman and Freel.

Dempster did smash up the gatorade machine.

Yes, I did see that.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing somebody punch him too.

I expected a bit of a drop off after last year but he's been awful. That contract is already a massive albatross.

Lou was horrible tonight. The bench management was poor and he definitely should have argued a little more on the piss poor strike zone. Hell, Lilly got tossed and he wasn't even in the game. If his health is a concern then he needs to send Trammel or Rothschild out because that can make a difference. I noticed after Lilly's ejection the ump was calling the corner a lot more.

The ump started calling the corner as soon as Demp left the game. I think he really pissed him off during their little exchange in the fourth.

As for Lou's managing, I would be really interested to hear what Trammell thinks of some of these moves. Anybody have an idea as to what kind of "veto" influence a bench coach has in these borderline situations? I think (and hope) that Trammell would disagree with some of these but decide it's not his place to offer a contrary opinion. Lou had me scratching my head all game today; I have to believe that not all of the coaching staff were in support of Ascanio hitting for himself before leaving in favor of Cotts.

Their little exchange in the fourth was because he wasn't calling the corner.

None. Certainly Trammell could give advice, but he can't overrule his boss.

Isn't that exactly what he said? That Dempster argued about the strike zone, and as a result, the umpire retaliated by being even more resistant to calling close pitches strikes. Then, once Dempster left, the grudge was gone, so we started getting some calls.

I was just thinking about how much I miss seeing Lou sprint out onto the field towards the umpire, yelling and throwing his hands in the air.

The bad calls were prior to the exchange. How was the ump holding a grudge with the zone prior to Dempster saying something?

He wasn't. I think the logic is that at first it was a coincidence, but after the arguement, it became a grudge.

For the record, that wasn't even my opinion. I was just reiterating what someone else had said, in different words, because it seemed like you were saying the same thing as one another, but still disagreeing :-))

His name’s Gary. And we don’t need any more lawsuits, okay?

Lou might be vetoing something Trammel does, but not the other way around.

Eh I didn't really make myself clear there. My point was that the ump was squeezing the strike zone smaller the more demp argued and it came to a head when they yelled at each other. Once demp leaves, there is no grudge and the ump shows he could've called a decent game had he chosen to do so.

Anyone else think Sandberg is being primed to be the next Cubs manager after Piniella gets fired or retires?

Unfortunately, I also have this feeling.

I actually think, if Lou departs on good terms (i.e. he's not fired), his successor may well be Alan Trammel. Ryno will get some consideration when Lou moves on, however.

It's not Lou's fault. If you want to point fingers you can point right at Jim Hendry for putting together one of the worst benches in recent Cub history, and a bad bullpen. Once the injuries hit the bench was exposed.

Lou may made some head scratching moves, but he's not to blame for the season.

A new world's record: Nine posts before someone blames Hendry. Now we're blaming Hendry for Lou's senility/dementia/bad decisions.

be honest- did you even read his post?

i definitely think that's the case. sandberg got a token interview after baker was let go and hendry told him to get managerial experience before he's get consideration for a manager's job in mlb. sandberg's been down in the minors going on his third season, doing exactly what hendry told him to do. he'll most definitely get consideration after piniella's gone and i think he's got a good shot at getting the position. now, if hendry is not making that decision, then i have no idea.

if sandberg is at Iowa next year then we will know.

if ryno becomes manager i may launch into a profanity-laced tirade that will get me banned from nsbb for months. he was my favorite player growing up but he would be a God-awful manager.
