Peter Gammons told ESPN's Mike & Mike In The Morning on Thursday that the Nationals have discussed swapping Nick Johnson for Boston's Manny Delcarmen.

The Red Sox will probably give David Ortiz a little more time to get his swing figured out before pulling the trigger. If he can't get it turned around, Johnson would make a nice fit. He's batting .338/.435/.473 this season with four home runs and 25 RBI in 148 at-bats. Delcarmen has been lights out, with a 0.95 ERA in 19 innings, but the Red Sox have enough pitching depth in their system to cope with the loss.

Probably money. Johnson will get more expensive, Delcarmen is a bargain right now for the production. Plus their system is more devoid of pitching than hitting (I think...).

Why would the Nats do this?

Why wouldn't the Nats do this? They're going nowhere and have had Johnson on the trading block forever. Trade him before he gets injured again.

I know he is hurt a lot but he is still a pretty good player. I just don't get trading an everyday guy for a middle reliever.

It's not as bad an idea as it sounds, I think. Nick Johnson is like the hitter's version of Rich Harden. Trade him while he's healthy for a return that, on paper, does not look that great. But I remember when the Nationals tried to spin Chad Cordero into a fortune in talent, which didn't work because they asked too much and he didn't miss enough bats. He could make a good-looking closer for a year, year and a half, then trade him off.

He was a full-time starter for two seasons in the minor leagues (2002 and 2004), so he may be able to revert back to that. I'm not that familiar with Delcarmen, but it's possible they only moved him from the rotation when it became evident they had ridiculous depth in starting pitchers and he may never see the majors as a starter.

I could be wrong, though.

Fwiw, Delcarmen would likely be the Cubs 2nd best reliever.

This single sentence was like a brutal dart to the face. For extra bonus pain, I suggest playing a game called "list of relievers the Cubs could have signed for the approximate cost of Aaron Miles".

I'd rather talk about signing Miles for two years instantly instead of orlando hudson.

I just wanted to put it on a tee for "BacktoBanks".

The Nats have a logjam at outfield/first. They have Dukes, Dunn, Kearns, Milledge, Dukes, and Willingham. They also have Dmitri Young who they can play at first. Trading Johnson allows them to get cheaper and pick up a pitching prospect while allowing all of these relatively young and/or productive guys, the latter mostly Dunn. They are pretty devoid of pitching and can use anything they can get. I see both sides wanting to do this.
