Cubs manager Lou Piniella hinted Thursday that Alfonso Soriano could begin seeing time at second base if Mike Fontenot's slump continues.

It actually makes a good amount of sense. Soriano is a former second baseman and the move, most importantly, would allow the hot-hitting Micah Hoffpauir to play left field. Fontenot is batting just .195/.292/.364 in 118 at-bats this season. "We'll explore all our other options," Piniella said. "I feel very comfortable with our outfield, but we've got to score some runs too."

For the sake of my keeper league fantasy team make this happen for at least 5 games. Who cares if he'll be atrocious in the field.

I don't think this will really happen though. Soriano is too much of a comfort zone kinda guy and can see his performance suffer when he is outside of it.

Just how bad of a defender would Soriano have to be to make this a net negative? There's a lot of assumptions about the performance of Micah and Fontenot required (let alone assuming Soriano can keep hitting while playing 2B), but is there any way this would end in anything but epic fail?

Yeah if Sori and Hoff keep hitting and we actually start scoring runs. If Hoff can hit at his current. .929 OPS rate or even .850 and Sori doesn't drop off offensively I'll take an extra error every other game or so. I don't see why Sori would drop off. Someone mentioned he is a comfort zone guy earlier in this thread, well he has said before that he prefers 2B to the outfield.

With our offense been absolute crap right now we have to get a bat like Hoffpauir in the lineup and a guy like Fontenot out. Our lineup isn't even good crap right now. We are like a great dane pile of crap offensively rather than a poodle pile of crap.

I understand Soriano is bad at 2B but would it really be that much of a killer to move him there. The Yankees won a World Series with him at 2B. The Brewers played Rickie Weeks who was atrocious last year at 2B and they won the Wild Card.

I think getting HoffPOWER's bat in the lineup would be more of a positive to the team, then Soriano's defense at 2b being a negative.

They won the WS in 2000,. He only had 53 PA's in that season though, and he didn't have any PA's in the postseason.

Yeah, I guess he didnt play in the postseason with the Yankees in 2000. I knew he cameup in 99 so I assumed he won a World Series with them.

Either way he still went to 2 World Series playing 2B, in 2001 and 2003, so I dont think he is that much of a killer to a team at 2b.

Not that I disagree with the sentiment, but it would take a lot to be a killer of chances to those early 2000s Yankees.

We're not getting 2003 Soriano at 2b. We're getting 2009 Soriano at 2b, with six years of wear and tear on his legs.

Yeah but we don't have the 2008 Fontenot. We have the craptastic new model where everything of good was stripped and only the cheap bad is left.

That doesn't mean you can start plugging guys in to important defensive positions who have absolutely, positively no business playing those positions.

Why not just put Hoff at 2nd?

i suspect that putting hoffpauir at 2B would cost the cubs fewer runs than putting hoffpauir in LF and soriano at 2B.

Too bad the Cubs don't have a guy like a Mark DeRosa to play 2B.

That took two posts longer than expected.

Ironically from a guy called "THe voice of Reason".

Why do people assume that Derosa would be hitting just as well as last season if he was still with the Cubs?
