There's some speculation that Wells could remain in the rotation when Zambrano returns. If that happens, then Marshall could move to the pen. Would that mean the end of the road for Neal Cotts? :-k

Left-hander Sean Marshall has pitched well enough to deserve to keep his job in the starting rotation, but Piniella said the continued problems with the bullpen -- including lefty Neal Cotts' struggles -- might mean Marshall gets moved to the bullpen when Carlos Zambrano returns from the disabled list, possibly as soon as eight days from now.

''When we get Zambrano back, now we've got Wells and we've got Marshall to look at, and then we'll have to make a decision,'' said Piniella, also referring to right-hander Randy Wells, who's filling in for Zambrano in the rotation. ''I like the way Wells throws the ball, so he'll be staying. So it's just a matter of where.''

Regardless of which player between Marshall and Wells stays in which roll the bullpen undoubtedly would improve. If Marshall remains in the rotation and Wells in the bullpen then it's bye bye Patton.

If thats true, it just keeps on continuing with the Cubs dumb decisions for the year. Marshall has performed very good as a starter this year, and in the past, to take him out of that spot so he can pitch to maybe 4 or 5 guys a week is plain ignorant. So I guess it wouldnt surprise me if it happens.

Poor Sean Marshall. Whenever you can take your 3rd best starter and make him a loogy, you have to make that move.

If Sean Marshall is moved out of the rotation, I've officially had it with Lou. Marshall's been pretty good and Wells has one career start. I liked Wells's performance as much of the next guy, but if he's staying up, then he'd better be staying up in the pen.

Wells is going to have to dazzle in his next start or 2 for that to even be considered an option. As of now, hes either going to take a pen spot of be sent to Iowa as a starter and await for the next one to go down.

What about piggybacking the 2 for 3-4 innings each, then they are both available in between starts to face a batter or two here and there.

that's way too creative for the cubs to consider.

This.

Marshall to the pen, especially if it's as a LOOGY when he doesn't do that much better against lefties, would make no sense. I'm fine with Wells in the pen, but he's done nothing in his career to earn a starting spot over Marshall.

I really don't have as many knee-jerk reactions as some of you guys regarding transactions, but I will pretty angry myself if Marshall is removed from the rotation. What's even worse is he might be removed not because he sucks, but because neal cotts sucks. Not cool. And what has Wells done to inspire all this confidence anyway?

All he had to do was pitch well the first time Lou used him for Lou to have confidence in him. He's pitched really well in AAA so far this year and pitched reasonably well down there last year. Considering the pool of talent that teams tend to draw on for relievers, it's seems somewhat reasonable to have some hope for the guy.

I'm not sure why we would keep Wells as a starter. He has one start and didn't look that great. I don't think moving Marshall to the pen would be that smart right now. On the other hand not seeing Cotts in the bullpen would make be happy.

Let's platoon them as 5th starter and start them against predominantly lefty or righty lineups!

Actually, that's stupid. Only a stupid manager on a stupid team would do something stupid like that

Fair enough, but I think your first sentence says everything about our pitching staff right now.

Unfortunately, this dilemna will solve itself when Wells gets lit up in his next start.

Regarding Patton, has he reached the point where he'd clear waivers if the Cubs wanted to pursue a trade for him? Down the road he could be valuable but right now he's a luxury the Cubs can't afford.

Ass backward.

A LOOGY a freaking LOOGY. Let me know when a LOOGY earns starter paydays.

This wont last long if it does. It can't it just can't. Wheres Mike Stanton, jeez i just said that.

Isnt it great having a manager who loves making ignorant knee jerk decisions?

I agree, Wells got good results in his first start, but he gave up a lot of hits/BB and was hit fairly hard. All it's going to take is a short outing from him (less than 4 innings) and giving up a few runs and walking/giving up a lot of hits and Lou will demand he gets sent down and somehow, someway Neil Cotts will continue to be a major league pitcher.

This is probably exactly what will happen.

I'll believe this when I actually see it. When is Randy Wells' next start anyway?

Cubs.com says Friday against Houston. Brian Moehler will be opposing him.

That should make Berkman happy. Tejada and Pence will somehow go 10 for 10. And Carlos Lee has been pretty quiet this year hasn't he? There goes Lou's delusional view on Wells.

The game will be at Wrigley, so Wells will have more room for error than at MMP. But, the top of that lineup does have the potential to rough him up.
