looking over the info, looks like mitchell had 3 offers: kansas state, north texas, and mizzou. for a 5 star recruit that seems strange. good luck with him, tho.

I know his mom got pretty involved in the recruiting process. Wanted to make sure her son was going to the "right" place. Not sure how much that scared off/eliminated bigger schools.

Illinois lost at home to Tennessee State in '08 and won 16 games that year. That game didn't even have the excuse of being the 1st game of the year with a lot of young players. These games happen sometime.s

The rehab wouldn't have been a sure thing and he was okay with redshirting even before seeing another specialist tomorrow. It's a potentially serious injury and he made the right choice, but it means 4 months before he can even begin rehabbing. And we lost our 2nd senior in 84 hours Friday night with a torn ACL. He's out for the year and will likely end his career that way. I don't think they can keep both scholarships for next year.

 

The depth on the team is long gone.

What SSR said. The reasons for the loss were actually the guys that I'm not worried about. Gatens had his worst game of his career easily. Tucker couldn't hit a shot. Fuller missed bunnies. Those guys are going to be fine. May looked really good. Payne was pretty good for the most part. Cole looked good except at the free throw line.

 

We're a bad team, everyone knows that. There's reason to be upset with the loss, just don't freak out like a maniac. It's the first game of the year. We aren't going to shoot 5-27 from 3 very often against a team that shoots 50% from 3.

If we hit our shots, Gatens, Tucker, Fuller and Cole played well but we still lost because we couldn't defend and the young guys were awful, I would be more worried. Oops read that as Vandy, not Valpo. But yeah, you really can't use that to determine how good a team is.

We lost to Richmond at home in 03-04, and that year we were an overtime loss from the Final Four. We lost to Oral Roberts at home in 06-07 and got to the elite 8 that year, too (lost to UCLA.) We lost to Ball State in the Maui Classic in one of our back-to-back Final Four years.

Either way, Cal recruited much better with Pastner there. Dude's unbelievable at getting talent. It will be interesting to see how he coaches them.
