Having said that, I find it amusing that as recently as two or three years ago, no one here was talking about Purdue, yet now there is a cabal of outspoken fans, acting pretentious. Will they go back to being invisible when Purdue goes back to the middle of the pack? Only time will tell.

Is anybody here talking about Michigan, Minnesota or Iowa? No, because they aren't very good and aren't located in the Chicagoland area. If a cabal of fans means about four then OK. But It's not like we're crawling out of the woodwork here. The Purdue hate from Illini fans, or fans of pretenders like ND or BSU is very similar to White Sox fans hate for the Cubs. Did my team win today? Nope. Oh well, Purdue still sucks. Classy.

In all honesty, this season has turned me around on the (we'll call it aggressive) Purdue defense. Sure as hell better than playing absolutely no defense at all like my squad and giving up 50 percent long-range nights to St. John's and Seton Hall every [expletive] game.

What? I don't care about Purdue. Trust me, the Boilers are way, way down the list of teams that I feel anything about. And I have only seen one person here actively hate on Purdue. One. And there are dozens of us here. Equating Illini fans' feelings towards Purdue to Sox fans feelings about the Cubs is just laughable. I think I can speak for most us in saying that if we were going to take that attitude, Iowa, Wisconsin, MSU, Indiana and UM would all come before Purdue for our negative feelings.

Personally, I always root for the B10, and have never felt conflicted rooting for Purdue when it didn't directly conflict with the Illini's interests. There's only one team that has even been in danger of making me feel that way, and it sure isn't you guys. You don't know much about Illini fans if you think we live and die on what Purdue does.

Nice swing and a miss on that one.

I just find it amusing that Purdue fans only started actively participating in college basketball discussions within the past year or so, and in the case of some, acting like pompous asses and making ridiculous assertions about Purdue's place in the b10. I'm not hating on Purdue, I'm just a little put off by the "we're a top 10 team for the first time in ages, and we're going to act like we've been here all along" attitude I've seen.

Some of you have been here for years, and I wouldn't have known you were Purdue fans a couple of years ago. I guess I just figured that since we're all Cubs fans here, we wouldn't have too many people whose level of interest is dictated by their team's fortunes.

Oh, come on. CubbieBum says some off the wall crap, and because of that a lot of people around here hate Purdue. Purdue's program grew stagnant at the end of Keady's career but Painter has really energized the program. They've been in the top echelon of Big Ten teams recently and have the recruiting ball rolling (bringing in 4 star recruits). If you can't admit that, it's just blind hatred.

No one's denying that. But it really has only been the last 2/3 seasons, and I think it's awfully premature to be putting your program ahead of MSU, OSU and even Wisconsin and Illinois as far as overall status goes. If things stay this way for 3-4 more seasons, maybe.

And I will concede that we're probably not having this discussion if not for the bum, but what he says sometimes takes ridiculous to a new level.

Oh, I agree we're not ahead of those programs in recent years. I openly said beating MSU on the road (had Kalin Lucas not even played) would be an upset for Purdue. I openly said after Purdue's three game losing streak that getting a #2 seed in the dance would be almost impossible (with MSU, @ OSU, and Illinois left - I stand by this). Your quote in bold is the biggest part of the whole problem. I think another thing is that CCCub is right, why would Purdue fans be flocking to post here when the team was godawful? Well, that and I've got less than 2k posts in 7 years, heh. From the very long term perspective Purdue has been a good program, including a winning record against every team in the conference, conference championships, a decent amount of success in the tournament, etc. We've gone through spurts of terrible basketball for sure, but we're on the upswing now. That's all I'm saying.

Well, you cared enough to make the comment alluding to the Purdue fans here as being bandwagoners. A lot of other posters are constantly bagging on Purdue. It's not that it hurts my feelings it just baffles me that other fans don't speak up and say hey they're a pretty damn good team. It's just constant 'oh they've never won a title', 'they'll choke prior to the final four', etc. This stuff is coming from Cubs fans that have to hear the same thing said about the Cubs and they should know how annoying and petty it sounds.

I think the attitude that you speak comes from the fact that fans who have followed them for a long period of time feel that this is back where they belong. Purdue is a good basketball program and should be considered in the elite of the conference. Their 21 Big Ten titles is nothing for other fans to scoff at and something their fans should be proud of. Winning on the road in the Big Ten is extremely hard.

Anyway, I've said my peace and this is not solely directed at you but the board as a whole.

I think the whole notion of prestige for a program is a fickle thing. It's a what have you done lately world, and CBB is no exception. Take Duke for example. Most people consider Duke to be a powerhouse, but what were they before Coach K came? And more importantly, does anyone care? Teams like UNC and Kentucky have built their rep on sustained success, but their recent success has more bearing on their future than their past successes.

When you talk about B10 hoops with most people, teams like MSU are always the first to come to mind. Are they the best team historically? No. But they've been the best B10 for a couple decades, and that's what people remember. Hell, even Indiana, for all their history, is beginning to fade into the background of these discussions. When you are talking about prestige/history, all that really matters is what your college's name means to the kids you're trying to recruit. They don't care about championships won 60 years ago, they care about now, and current reputation. And for most programs, success is cyclical. For all Illinois' recent success, a couple more years of this and we're not very relevant.

The unfortunate reality is that unless you are a UNC, UCLA or Kentucky caliber program, your "long term success" really doesn't mean squat.

Purdue is a pretty good team, and a team on the rise. And that's good for the conference. But if you go around saying you should be considered B10 elite because you're back at the top even though you haven't sustained elite performance since before the shot clock era, you're going to catch some flack, and deservedly so.

This is getting old. The only thing I said this year that everyone seems to be stuck on is that historically Purdue is amongst the best in the Big Ten. Everyone has decided that history only exists in the last 20 years. Like I said months ago. If you go off the last 20 years or 10 years Purdue is obviously not amongst the best. I said historically and everyone seems to not know that definition.

Last year it was Hummel. I don't remember exact details but I remember it revolving around my saying that if Hummel was healthy he would win BTPOY. Everyone seemed to drop the healthy part and just take it as Hummel = BTPOY.

So I get labeled as a massive homer even though I'm really not. I have no problem admitting MSU was better last year even if Hummel was healthy or that Ohio State is better this year with Turner in the lineup. Anyways you all can label me what you want I don't care in the end and will continue to post as I feel like posting no matter what it gets turned into.

No, you said IU and Purdue can't be in the same division because they're clearly the best two teams historically in the Big Ten. It was dumb enough on the surface, without even getting into the fact that you felt we just had to keep them separate because Purdue won a a bunch of conference titles played by guys who've been dead for 30 years.

Regarding Hummel, you said that he'd win it because the voters realized he was hurt and because they voted him preseason BTPOY.

You also said some loopy stuff about Lewis Jackson averaging 15 points a game.

Ah yes the LewJack stuff. I said that at his peak he could turn into a 15 pts a game scorer. Still think that. Everyone again twisted it into me saying he WOULD become that. I remember saying at one point that I was meaning it in a if he was Willie Deane on a crap team he could score 15 a night. Considering he scored 6 as a freshman on a team with plenty of scorers its not far fetched that he could score 15 a night.

And I said if Hummel came back and played great at the end he would win it. He never was able to come back to full strength. I said that voters would realize he was hurt for a portion of the season and would reward him for coming back.

Let me be on record in saying that I like Purdue. Always have had respect for their program. Much like MSU I always cheer for them unless it impacts Illinois.

I don't mind them, but Barlow's a punk, and Kramer is a flopping, foul on every play Duke wannabe.

Yeah I am not a Kramer fan at all. Haven't seen enough of Barlow yet to have an opinion.

I can understand the Kramer hate. I always say that Kramer is the type of player you love to have on your team and loathe if he is not.

As far as I go. I root for every Big Ten team in non-conference and tourney games except IU. I can never root for them.
