and yet, they have one less final four appearance than iowa.

For all the talk around here about the MLB playoffs being a crap shoot why isn't the NCAA tourney viewed the same way? Teams get hot at the right time and make a nice run. Unfortunatel,y Purdue has not had success in that manner. However, they have been able to endure and triumph through a very tough conference season 21 times. That cannot be dismissed just because of the lack of their tournament success.

In some respects it's a crapshoot, but the best programs get to the Final Four and Title Game much more frequently than your Boilermakers. At some point it has to count for something.

As for your next point, how do you have any clue how "very tough" the conference seasons were in 1920? Of your 21 Big Ten titles, 13 were won between the years of 1911-1940. I mean for many of those years, the radio didn't even exist. Yes I know that's part of the "historically the best" argument that Bum made, but you cannot honestly compare a Big Ten title in 1921 to one any year after 1960, when there were advancements like the shot clock, national recruiting, and television that completely revolutionized the level of play in college basketball. You can't win 62% of your titles 70 years or more ago, then have a couple of good recruting classes in the mid-80s and mid-90s while having a tournament history that pales in comparison to half of the conference, and then claim that Purdue is historically the 2nd best team in the Big Ten with a straight face.

Exactly (again). Those 13 titles were won in an era where is was almost a different sport. You don't want to fall into a "what have you done for me lately" mindset, but when you are using titles won prior to advents that changed that dramatically changed the sport forever, you're not being fickle. There's a reason most records are qualified by being in the shot clock or "modern" era.

Let's not forget how this debate began, which was bum saying that it would be unfair to put Indiana and Purdue in the same conference division, which was ludicrous at best.

Purdue off to another ugly start. Almost half way through the first and I don't think JJ even has a shot yet. Way too many 3-point attempts, way too many turnovers... ugh... I was hoping for a 2 seed in the tourney... that's looking less likely now that conference play has started.

Created a few games over at jawdle to illustrate Purdue's place in the big 10. :D

I don't get it? What does that say about Purdue in the Big Ten?

I'll create a table that illustrates Purdue's place in the Big Ten.

Big Ten Titles

Chicago* 6 1924

Illinois 17 2005

Indiana 20 2002

Iowa 8 1979

Michigan 12 1986

Michigan State 11 2009

Minnesota 9 1982

Northwestern 2 1933

Ohio State 17 2007

Penn State 0 ---

Purdue 21 1996

Wisconsin 17 2008

CubbieBum was trying to insist that IU and Purdue were head and shoulders over everyone else for program history.

They're not.

Perhaps you didn't realize that Purdue has Robbie Humell.

Yes they do and he has just as many points(29) has the entire OSU team has in the first half of play.

I'm hoping DePaul hires Lowery away from us. There's been a lot of rumblings over the last 24 hours that there's mutual interest between Lowery and the school.

I like DePaul, but that would be a very mediocre hire for them. Lowery's a guy that has recruited better than his predecessors here at SIU, but he hasn't been able to coach these guys into great players. Our program has sunk the last couple of years. It figured that we'd have a down year eventually, but to have three seasons in a row where we're going to miss the NCAA Tournament (including two seasons where we might finish under .500) is completely unacceptable.

Well, historically Iowa is a top ten program in all of college basketball. :-)

sigh, another loss to the talor battles.

I'm hoping this is our bad half. There's a lot of standing around on offense, and long rebounds leading to fast breaks for Penn State.

Why in the hell was Jordan letting that ball go out of bounds?

Did u see what happened the last time he saved a ball under under their basket?

Uk going to 17-0 with a solid win vs. UF. It was close before UK went on the 10+ point spurt to win the game. Good to see that with Wall having an off night that Bledsoe can step up with a great night. It's nice to see UK with several weapons again as well as being extremely excited about their program again.
