Four Tennessee basketball players, including starting senior forward Tyler Smith, were charged with gun possession and other counts after a Friday traffic stop.

The Knoxville Police Department said Smith, 23, junior point guard Melvin Goins, 22, junior center Brian Williams, 22, and sophomore guard Cameron Tatum, 21, were arrested during a traffic stop for speeding near Tennessee's campus.

According to a police report, officers smelled marijuana coming from the car and found a handgun with an altered serial number, a bag of marijuana and an open container of alcohol. Tatum was driving.

Officers could not determine whether any of the players were under the influence of marijuana, though the strong odor suggested marijuana had recently been smoked in the car, the police report said.

Tatum was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and having an open container of alcohol. Smith was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, which is a felony. Goins and Williams both face gun and drug possession charges.

And to think I was sad to see Goins transfer.

We were down by 13 at the half to Bradley on the road and then we nearly score 50 in the second half to win 86-81. That's like the fourth game this year where we've had a gigantic comeback in the second half. A great start to MVC play and now the game against UNI is going to be a pretty big one for conference implications.

Some fun facts from the media guide:

- all five starters for the Illini are averaging in double digits in scoring

- Illinois has won threee straight versus ranked opponents this season

- Illinois is 32-8 at the United cdenter

- Mike Davis leads the big 10 in rebounding (10.4) and McCamey leads in Assists (5.6)

Some sloppy play and a couple of fouls on Tisdale put the Illini in an early bind.

Gonzaga hitting from outside early and Illinois is ice cold.

So, the perimeter defense has been weak, the ballhandling has been shoddy, the shooting has been ice cold and the team can't get a rebound to save their lives.

Other than that, I can't explain the 19-4 deficit.

Notre Dame hung tough but lost to UConn. I was impressed with the effort but UConn's too big and too talented.

take the ball to the hoop every time, paul.

Brandon Paul may not be able to guard anyone yet, but he has to play a ton of minutes. He's going to be our best player next year. At least he needs to be if we want to do anything.

He also needs to play under control, you can't have him up there jacking up terrible shots as he has at times this year.

And there's no way Paul is the best player on the team next year.

I agree, but he can't just sit him for as much as he has been lately.

Also you don't think it's possible? The only guys who I could see challenging him are DMac and Jereme.

I agree that there's been a few too many lesson teaching moments with Paul, but I'd rather be more cautious in the preconference season rather than giving him a longer leash.

With regards to next year, I think Tisdale, Davis, DMac, DJ, and Jereme are all in the conversation. Paul will be better than some of them, but I think he's got too much ground to make up on the juniors to expect him to be our best player. If he is our best player, we're in for a special season.
