But (as you mentioned with Randle) I don't believe that to be the case with Beal. And when you have 5 schollies for '11/'12, you can afford to wait on one stud. I'm fine if Quincy Miller wants to stretch things out with us and take it up to the last second, assuming we find homes for at least one other scholarship. Worst case you wind up banking for one of the Indy guys in '12.

I'm just glad that despite the loss of Beal, we're still in decent/great shape with some really good guards in Randle and Langford. I'm sure they were each aware we were going hard for Beal, but I think we were giving them a lot more attention than we did a Moore or whoever in the IDKWTI year. This could be partially a function of the large amount of scholarships for '11, but I really do think the whole ordeal taught the staff a lesson. It worked to get Griffey in the fold by giving a take it or leave it vs. Cooley, and if we are sold on Langford, I think we'll wind up with him the same way in a take it or leave it with Randle.

So, ACC-Big Ten challenge this week, with less fanfare than ever!

Here's what I'm thinking, in order of confidence (from highest Big Ten to highest ACC)

Purdue over Wake Forest - Purdue at home against an over-matched WF team, should be the most lopsided game of the challenge.

Ohio State over Florida State - Florida State actually looked pretty good over the weekend, but OSU has a solid team and HCA.

Michigan over Boston College - Michigan hasn't exactly looked that good, but they're still at home against a lower-half ACC team in BC.

Minnesota over Miami - Would have been higher, but Miami has looked good early, and is at home.

Northwestern over NC State - Would have been near the bottom last week, but Northwestern actually looks competitive.

Michigan State over North Carolina - Who knows, really? MSU should be better, but...

Virginia over Penn State (yes, I know they already played this one, but this is what I thought going in) - PSU looked awful (well, more awful than VA) early on, and the game was in Virginia.

Virginia Tech over Iowa - Even though the game is in Iowa, Iowa did lose to TX-San Antonio at home already this year, and VT, though possibly the worst ACC team, is better than TX-San Antonio.

Maryland over Indiana - If Indiana has really made progress this year, the game could be close. They didn't have a very good run in Puerto Rico, though.

Clemson over Illinois - The game is at Clemson, probably the third best team in the ACC this year, and Illinois didn't exactly look impressive last weekend in Vegas (although, they didn't look near as awful as some may have stated...trouble closing out teams, and new players struggling)

Duke over Wisconsin - Even though the game is in the Kohl Center, Duke has looked like the best team in either conference so far, and blew out a much better Purdue team in WL last year.

I already made my picks earlier in this thread, I think I had Big Ten winning 7-4. I did pick Penn St., cause Virginia is awful.

Oh, and if anyone wants free money, last I checked VA Tech was only a 3 point favorite at Iowa.

Eh, Va Tech is bad also. Not as bad as Iowa but still bad. Delaware just took them to overtime. They've won 3 games against awful teams without huge margins. They're a terrible offensive team.

Also one of these nights Iowa is going to just go crazy and hit a ton of 3's. They're good shooters getting open looks but not making anything. I would be scared to bet on any team like that who shoots so many 3's. I think they might win.

Maryland hasn't been impressive and that has gotten hopes up among IU's fanbase. The line, last I checked, was only Maryland -5. I'd take Maryland and laugh all the way to the bank (as much as I hope that prediction is incorrect). I'm sure at Assembly Hall IU will be better than they showed in Puerto Rico -- though they were unimpressive Saturday at home -- but I would be stunned if IU wins. However, I no longer necessarily expect a demolition as I did before the season.

Yeah I think we are handling the situation well. We are going to probably bank a scholly and I am cool with that. Just land two more guys for the 11 class then get to work on 13.

I'd really like to go all out for one of the '11 studs with the 5th scholarship. I don't know who else besides Miller we'd have a shot at though. The '11 class seems like a better bet for us than '12, and you have to assume at least one scholly opens up for '12 even if you fill up '11(early entry/transfers)

I don't think he meant that as it came out though. I think he meant that he would rather not lose other great players because you are concentrating so much on an elite player that you don't have a great chance to land. If that's the case I agree. It hurt us a lot a few years ago. We could have possibly had E'Twaun Moore had we not been waiting around on Eric Gordon. But, yeah you cannot just take kids who commit right away. Or else you will end up with a bunch of mid major kids who were blown away by an Illinois offer.

I agree. I think in that case the grim realities of CBB come into play. Offer both. Take the first who agrees. If it's the lesser of two players, tell the better one you still want him. If he wants a scholly, too, you gotta bump someone else from the squad.

I'm looking forward to seeing Vazquez in person tonight. I've always been a fan of his, despite his obvious mercurial nature. This will be the first time I've seen Maryland play since the 2002 National Championship game ( :( ) as I missed the rematch in Indianapolis the following season. I'll be sitting down in the bleachers. \:D/

Yeah it really sucks. I hate to see guys get forced out, but with reality being what it is most coaches have no choice. It's turning more and more into college footbal which is a bad thing.

Everyone stop talking me out of winning money off of Iowa.

Haven't seen Va Tech yet, but have a hard time thinking they will lose to Iowa.

They lost to Temple on the road, and got taken to OT by Delaware at a neutral site. It could actually be a close game.

Sweet, I hope Iowa gets that one. I'd like to smoke the ACC.

Iowa did tie Texas for a half too. I'm gonna be really pissed when Iowa loses by at least 4.

Would you be more pissed if you bet VT and Iowa pulled out a win?

That's win win for me, as long as I am not betting a lot. Iowa wins one for the big ten, or you make money.

The best part about being on ESPNU is having announcers who refuse to actually talk about the game. Hopefully Jay Williams can talk about himself some more.

Went with Maryland (-5 1/2) and VA Tech (-3)

I agree with VT, but I like the under 118 even more. Iowa is 330 in pace this year and VT is 283.

You didn't like his story how David Thompson said he was going to be a great ACC player?

I'm just pissed I missed MD(-4 1/2) like it was earlier today. Didn't want to bet on my work computer.

I thought about taking the under without knowing anything about VA Tech's pace, I think I'll take that too. Over/Unders just scare me cause OT or free throw fests give you an auto loss no matter the pace.
