The Cubs biggest goal this past offseason was to get more left handed. Mark DeRosa bats with the right hand. End of story.

Yup. One way or the other, a righty was gone and a left-handed thumper was on his way. Fukudome and Fontenoy just aren't enough pop from the left side to face a bunch of stud righties in the playoffs. In hindsight, things should've been done differently (though plenty of us have been advocating Hoff over Dlee for some time now) but their plan to get some left-handed thump was spot-on.

Here's the bad thing about that train of thought: The man signed to be the "left-handed thumper" doesn't really have a track record of playing a full season. 141 is the most he's ever played in one season. The Cubs already have a third baseman who misses time. And the man most capable of playing third or a corner OF spot is the one who was traded, and to top it off Derosa put up good numbers. I guess Hendry thought that Aaron Miles would somehow fill the Derosa role. Ryan Freel will now fill the DeRosa role.

Hendry also did it as a favor to Derosa, it's how he operates. (Given the fact they wanted more LH'ed bats) He knew that Fontenot was going to be the everyday 2B (in an ideal world) and that Derosa would struggle to everyday ABs which he deserves. Hendry is a very loyal guy to those who are loyal to the Cubs. So between what was already mentioned as far as thinking those pieces will be needed to get Peavy as well as trading Derosa to a place to where he can play everyday, I believe those are two main reasons why he was traded.

I honestly dont think you would be worried about DeRosa if DLee, Bradley and Aram were healthy and/or doing what they were supposed to do. Your offense will even out, and you wont miss DeRosa.

We still didn't get enough in return for him. But, yeah when the offense starts to click we won't miss him as much.

care to re-think this statement?

Also, the lefthanded thumper we got hits lefties better than righties.

yes, I know. ;)

For what it's worth, he has a .265 BABIP.

I know you put a disclaimer on it, but I'm not a big fan of BABIP as an excuse. He could deserve that BABIP for rolling over easy grounders.

I guess a low BABIP with a high LD% might catch my attention.

His LD% is 13%. It's the lowest of his career and 5% below last year.

I'm not refuting that he's struggling, but if he gets that BABIP up at all those numbers will start to look better. If he wants to be relatively close to as good as last year, though, he'll have to start hitting the ball more solidly.
