Ok well guess theres no better time to ask this than now, but did we ever get a clear description of Bradleys injury clause in his contract? I know there was some questions on it when he signed, and I hadnt seen any clear definitions of it.

signed by Chicago Cubs as a free agent 1/6/09

$4M signing bonus

09:$5M, 10:$9M, 11:$12M option

2011 may become $12M club option with $2M buyout based on Bradley's health

2011 option vests with 75 games played in 2009

The bolded appears to be the key, saying 2011 becomes guaranteed if he plays 75 games this year. If he plays less it becomes a $12m option with a $2m buyout.

I'd say the odds are stacked unfavorably for Bradley to get that option to vest.

I'd say the odds are heavily in his favor to be able to play 75 games this year.

So we know why he's appealing

So we know why he's appealing

Why are people so hung up on the appeal story? He doesn't think he deserved suspension, he doesn't want to lose 2 days of pay, there's nothing wrong with him fighting it. There are going to be plenty of times the rest of the year where sitting for a couple days will more or less be a necessity.

But basically he's hurting the team to do it. Will there be a time where he needs 2 games off? Yes, but we all know the best he's going to do with the appeal is get 1 game off. So, he's essentially hurting the team for 1/162 of his $10 million salary. Way to see you've changed, Milton.

I tried to talk myself into this guy being a good addition, but the injuries and weirdness are just going to be too much, I'm afraid. Guy better put up a .900 OPS if we have to deal with all of this garbage.

That is a bunch of BS. Players appeal suspensions all the freaking time.

Yeah, that's it.

If you get suspended at work for 2 days, no pay, but you don't think you did what you're accused of doing would you just take the punishment because maybe your company wouldn't get some big account otherwise? If he legitimately thinks he didn't do anything, he's got every right to appeal.

People are already mad at him for exercising what he is entitled to under MLB rules. Imagine what will happen if he continues to put up ABs that aren't productive.

Does Lou not realise what hes doing to the bench? With Hoff or Johnson to get his starts, that leaves one of them as the only respectable option off the bench. The way Jake Fox is doing in Iowa, and the time leading up to it, theres no harm in bringing him up. We can not only see if he's for real, but could possibbly get some trade interest in him. Theres really no point in keeping a guy active whose not going to see much playing time. In a perfect world, hed have been DLd over a week ago, had time to rest and hopefully be on his way off it in the next few days.

If he's too hurt to play, why not fly to NY, do the appeal, and find out the decision then? And he isn't getting punished by his employer.

That comparison makes no sense. He's not getting in trouble by his employer (the Cubs), he's getting in trouble with their boss (like if you got in trouble with the government at your job). I know that my employer would want me to take care of my problem with the government swiftly and with as little problem to the company as possible (especially considering his contract is guaranteed and paid by the Cubs, not MLB).

You can't just go do the appeal. I'm pretty sure MLB sets up a time for you to come there and make the appeal and it's not subject to being set by the player or his team.

Exactly. It's more than just Milton here. He has to have Union representation at any appeals process. There's a lot of red tape that goes on with all that stuff. Milton is following the process that MLB requires for an appeal.

I'm glad he's such a man of his principles, but he's only giving up about $62,000 if he drops his suspension (probably about $40K after taxes).

If you make 100K, it would be paying a $617 fine. Whoopity doo.

When you put it that way, that's like 61,000 lap dances for Milton. Appeal away, Milton!

Meet Milton in St. Louie?

Posted by Bruce on Thu, 04/23/2009 - 10:32

Milton Bradley went up to Lou's office this morning, and the verdict is that Lou isn't going to play his mercurial right fielder until Bradley and his strained right groin are up to it. Right now, that's not the case, so Micah Hoffpauir will be in right.

Bruce also said Milton will bat 6th.

I think part of that reflects how the pitchers approached Ramirez this week. He's the Cubs best hitter, and pitchers do not have any incentive to give him anything to hit. They threw at him a couple times, hitting him at least once. With the non-entities of Fontenot and Soto behind him, why not just plunk him repeatedly?

Wonder if this was Bradley's idea or Lou's to sit him down?

Well, it's all upside from here since Bradley really couldn't have gotten off to a worse start with the Cubs. He has as many ejections as hits and has missed more games than he has played...

If I was making Milton's kind of money, I wouldn't feel like that kind of percentage-of-income based comparison is valid. I'm not saying he's doing it because of the money, but after all.........$62k does buy a pretty damn nice car or some other very nice thing, and $617? Not much.

Yeah, I'm sure that someone making $100k a year that gets fined $617 would just "shoot, that's pocket change. I've got that in my wallet. I didn't do anything wrong, but I can't even be bothered to fight it it's such a small amount."

I wasn't able to watch the game. Was Milton getting booed last night?

he got booed after his final at-bat in the 9th.
