Luis Rivas - DL hamstring

Doug Deeds - activated

No backup SS for Iowa (except maybe Bobby Scales or Nate Spears). Down to 3 true infielders on the team (Scales, Spears, and Andres Blanco). Doug Deeds, Jake Fox, and Jason Dubois all can play 1B. Maybe Fox will get some more time at 3B over the next 7 days? Maybe the Cubs will finally sign a free agent infielder to play at Iowa?

EDIT: Oops - forgot about Matt Matulia, never mind.

Marcos Mateo should probably get promoted to AA soon.

3 for 4 day so far for Colvin including his 1st home run of the season.

Marquez Smith with another two hits. He still isn't progressing quite fast enough for a college player but it's nice to see him doing much better at Daytona than last year.

Tony Thomas with his third home run of the season. The Cubs decided to promote him anyway even with his rather poor season in Daytona last year. It's quite a start so far for him this year. Just as a comparison with the home runs, he had seven total last year.

His K/BB ratio is still a problem for him though. He's going to have a hard time if he continues to strike out more than 25 percent of the time and doesn't improve that walk rate to compensate.

So Taguchi is receiving treatment for a left calf problem that's kept him off the field since last Thursday. Sam Fuld was dinged on the leg by a pitch last night and taken out of the game in the bottom of the inning (he was out today, so it's probably bothering him). Doug Deeds is fresh off the DL after a lower back problem flared up on Opening Day.

Infielder-outfielder Jake Fox was named the Pacific Coast League's hitter of the week. He went 14-for-22 (. 478) with 7 home runs, 5 doubles and 14 runs scored. Fox entered Monday with a .528 on-base percentage, 1.087 slugging percentage and an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of 1.615.

"He's in a streak like Hoffpauir was last year," Hendry said, referring to Micah Hoffpauir, who hit 25 homers last year for Iowa and made the Cubs' opening-day roster this year. "He (Fox) hit one on top of a building yesterday."

Not sure I have this exactly right, but I believe Parker and Gaub each have 4.1 innings pitched. In their 8.2 innings, they've combined for 18 K. Both appear to have brought stuff to AA that is hard to hit. Lambert, by contrast, who was a strong K pitcher in past and whose curveball was supposedly quite good, has like 1 K in 9+ innings.

Gaub is pretty raw and I have little confidence in his control, or consistency.

But the way Cotts is going, if Gaub keeps going well and Cotts keeps struggling, Gaub could come up a lot sooner than I ever imagined.

remember when someone on espn said that the best free agent acquisition off the offseason was tim wilken? And now we have tyler colvin and josh vitters instead of travis snider and matt wieters.

snider is OPSing 1063 in toronto

Just pointing out why he's in a lower level...I don't think anyone here is enamored with the pick. I certainly am not.

Des Moines Register[/url]"]“If you told me three or four years ago that Jake would be swinging the bat the way he is right now, I’d say you’re on drugs,” Joshua said. “He wouldn’t listen to instruction; he wanted to do it his way.”

“I’ve seen great improvement in his knowledge of the strike zone,” Hendry said. “He used to swing at bad pitches. He could always hit the fastball, now he’s working the counts and hitting the breaking ball better.

“He’ll get to the big leagues, and we’re certainly hoping it’s with us.”

I wonder how significant the timing of Jim Hendry's visit to Iowa and reports that he was trying to trade Fox all spring, are to Joshua's gushing.
