"should" is getting translated as "near lock"? Prospect creep.

This is really a distinction you think is worth making?

What, is should 70% and near-lock 80% in your book?

Consider the party with whom you're discussing this.

It's my solemn duty to stamp out prospect creep whenever I find it. It's a mission from God.

Should is 50.0001% or better. "Near lock" is a lot higher than that.

Word on high from Callis or not, I'm sticking with my prediction that when you factor in injuries and eligibility issues, Vizcaino isn't close to being even money to be on that list next year.

BA doesn't consider service time for rookies, so Vizcaino would have to rack up 50 big league innings prior to September 1st to no longer be eligible for their next top 100 list.

Thats total, right? Not 50 just this upcoming season, correct? He had 17+ with the Braves in 2011.

Vizcaino I'd say is 50/50 even if he's eligible and healthy. He was at No. 83 before getting hurt, and now there are even bigger questions about his ability to stick as a starter.

He was #40 going into 2012.

Callis is really saying all four SHOULD make the list, which would make their individual likelihoods of making the list much higher than 50%, even if "should" on its own only means 50.00001%.

My mistake. Dates are hard.

Awesomely funny, true, and wish like hell I could see it- Vogelbach was taking grounders at 3B today.

OMG, love it. If he could get up to Pedro Alvarez level defense at 3B he could still be a valuable player with the bat.

Other news from AZPhil is shitty. Maples is hurt again. Either elbow or shoulder, not sure which. Torrez is in camp, temporarily at least, assigned to Daytona. Vogelbach is assigned to Kane County.

Hopefully it's the elbow. He should have just [expletive] gotten TJS a year ago

Drafted in 2011 and he's thrown 10.1 innings, none above the AZL. If he has TJS then he's going to be 22 before he even sees Boise or Peoria. At this point I'd be thrilled if he even turned into a decent set up guy.

Apparently Austin Urban looked really good, which is exciting since he missed all of last season. Along with Torrez, Eric Leal, Erick Castillo and Mark Malave are also in Mesa (they all played in the DSL last year).

I'll be floored if Vogelbach ever plays meaningful innings at third base.

Can he really be worse than Jake Fox at 3rd? Would you say that Fox got "meaningful innings" at 3rd?

Of course he can. Why do people phrase things this way?

Yes.

Yes, Vogelbach is athletic for his size. But he's not as athletic as Prince Fielder. Now imagine Prince Fielder playing anywhere besides first base or DH. And Vogelbach is only going to get bigger and less athletic as he gets older. There's a reason players downgrade defensive positions as they mature, and Dan Vogelbach of all people isn't going to buck that trend.

If Vogelbach plays meaningful innings at third base at Kane County, he'll take away valuable playing time from Jeimer Candelario, who might actually be able to stick at third base in the big leagues.

Maples threw today and looked decent, according to AZPhil, so thats positive news for sure. Johnson is now on Daytonas' minor league roster, so I guess he starts out there or even Kane County. AZPhil has yet to see Paniagua and Torreyes. Others of lesser note as well. Hope they're not having VISA issues.

Guys, Vogelbach is not going to be in the plans at 3B. It's really not a big deal for a 1B prospect to be taking ground balls at 3B in a Spring Training practice session. It's basically the same exact position he already plays except opposite, so he was probably just moving there for a few while someone else covered 1B. Called efficiency.

Not really prospect news, I just found it funny.

Anyone who followed the minor league games last year knows what an RBI machine Justin Bour was last season. He led the entire organization with 110 RBI in 138 games and 577 PA on a Smokies team that was middle of the pack (5th out of 10) in team OBP. The only player for Tennessee that was amongst Southern League leaders in OBP was Logan Watkins (4th at .383), but not surprisingly (because he was almost always hitting a couple spots in front of Bour), he led the league in runs with 93. His next closest competitor had 81. After that, everyone was in the 70s. Suffice it to say, last season, Bour was clutch.

Justin got his only 2013 spring at bat yesterday. He singled, and, you guessed it, drove in a run...

Phil Rogers with a snippet on Saunders (a little over the top)

Don't overlook Timothy Saunders on your list of the Cubs' shortstop prospects. It's an indictment of the scouting

community that he was still available in the 32nd round of last year's draft after twice leading Marietta College to Division III titles. He has been one of the best hitters from that draft so far, killing the ball everywhere he's been, including a recent homer while making a cameo appearance in the Cactus League. Said Cubs senior VP scouting/player development Jason McLeod: “Just on his athleticism and actions, he should’ve been drafted much higher. I think the start to his career is legit. He’ll be tested this year to see what he can do over a full season.’’

Saunders, a right-handed hitter, led Marietta to a 163-42 record in four seasons, including a combined 95-12 his last two seasons. He batted .441 when he returned to Marietta for his senior season after going undrafted as a junion and put together a slash line of .381/.431/.536 in 49 games after signing with the Cubs, including some time with high-A Daytona. Between college and the pros, Saunders had 10 home runs and 58 stolen bases last year. He could turn into one of the Cubs' best draft picks ever. More McLeod: “He’s a very athletic guy who simply went under the radar going into the draft last year – and that includes us. Sometimes those (Division III) schools can get overlooked due to the competition level.’’
