Winter league team executive on Vitters:

""No pudo tomar el ritmo a la ofensiva y no tenemos tiempo para esperar"

Translates to:

"He couldn't take the rhythm of the offense and we have no time to wait."

wtf does that mean?

Posted

Looks like they are saying he couldn't get into the swing of things (for a less literal translation) and they didn't have time to wait.

And it still doesn't make much sense.

Wow that seems to be pretty pushy for a VWL team.

There's been some baseless speculation that it could be trade related.

:beg:

I'd have to think it's just a matter of time. Still have no idea why he was brought up this year, though. He was kind of set up to fail.

No idea? He was hitting well at AAA and plays a position where the Cubs were getting nothing at the major league level. I can see being against the call-up but I don't know how you can have no idea why it happened.

Sooo will Vitters just be shut down from playing anywhere the rest of the winter or will he/the Cubs try and find him another team/league? It would be nice to see him get some games in against fringe/below average-average MLB type talent this offseason yet.

No, the Caribbean leagues are real hard core. Sounds par for the course for a young player with no big league track record, especially as a non-native.

I'm sure they'll try to squeeze him in somewhere. Mexico seems like the best bet.

I heard a rumor that its Javier Baez's 20th birthday.

(If you follow him on twitter this is hilarious.)

Dude has been brutal today. Doesn't he have anything better to do on his birthday than retweet happy birthday wishes 67848569 times?

Figured I'd put this here as I found it interesting and hadn't heard some of this before. Kaplan went on a mini-rant after the Fujikawa signing:

David Kaplan ‏@thekapman

How about this: When Cubs drafted Vitters the guy that Tim Wilken wanted but wasn't allowed to sign was Orioles star catcher Matt Wieters.

David Kaplan ‏@thekapman

That was before Ricketts took over and money wasn't there for over slot signings. Wilken loved him.

David Kaplan ‏@thekapman

In addition 2 Wieters, Cubs were close to drafting Jarrod Parker that draft. Mgmt didn't want risk of HS arm They had Vitters below other 2

David Kaplan ‏@thekapman

Look, here's the deal. Hendry was told in '06 to spend + try to win immediately. He spent and came close. That came at the expense of draft

To be honest, that's nothing most of us didn't know. It's been implied for some time that the Cubs had Wieters and Moustakas ahead of Vitters and really liked Parker a lot (obviously they had Price ahead of Vitters too).

And Bruce Miles calls out Kaplan. Bravo, Bruce.

@BruceMiles2112: When #Cubs were winning division titles, nobody had Jim Hendry on air more or praised Jim Hendry more than @thekapman

Shrug. Again just said it was news to me. Sadly didn't follow the minors as much back then.

Man looking over that 2007 draft makes me sad. What a stacked year that was.

Wow, I had no idea.

Anyone know the latest on how Lake is doing?

No idea on his stats, but he hit his 4th homer today and according to TopProspectAlert, hes making a run at player of the league.

Actually got around to looking them up. This is apparently heading into today:

113 AB, .336 BA, .402 OBP, .478 SLG, .879 OPS, 33/11 K/BB, 8/1 S/CS (with 5 errors)

Really looking forward to see what he can do in the PCL

I believe he's mostly been playing OF.

Yeah I think I heard that somewhere as well.

Is this because the team Lake plays on is loaded in the infield or have the Cubs decided his future gonna be in CF?

In response to the two above posts, from BleacherNation:

Jed Hoyer on Junior Lake, who continues to rip up the Dominican Winter League: “Junior is an amazing athlete. He has the ability to move around. When you have a guy who can play short and third and left and center field, I think we’ll use all that athleticism. We don’t know exactly what his final home will be but it’s been nice to get reports from [long time scout and Dominican manager] Dave Jauss from the Dominican Republic talking about [Lake's] performance and development. I hope he can springboard off a good winter ball and head into Spring Training with some confidence.” This is the second straight season that Lake has dominated a post-season league (last year it was the AFL). He remains an enigma: a physical talent with skills he can’t harness consistently, and enough defensive ability at a variety of positions to maybe be passable, but not enough (yet) to be great at any one spot.

I do. He retreats everything with his name in it, which is pretty cool, but yesterday my Twitter feed was literally 75% birthdays Tweets to him.

I can't imagine his future home being SS or 3B, as a starter anyway, but I'm all for him getting all the OF reps possible.

Posted
Lake as a super-sub in a year or two is intriguing. I agree that I don't ever see him being a fulltime 3B/SS but if he can play SS/3B/2B and the OF he could be pretty valuable.
