Frank (Chicago): How would you rate Gioskar Amaya's tools on the 20-80 scale?

Jim Callis: Optimistically, you could project him as a 6 bat, 4 power, 55 run, 5 for glove & arm at 2B.

I'll take that.

A 6 bat / 4 power at second base? Along with above average defense & running? Hell yeah.

6 and 4 on a 20-80 scale doesn't seem good to me.

(you understand that's really 60/40, right?)

Honestly, I'm pleased with the assessment, especialky the power and speed, but I thought he may actually have gotten a 64 or 70 potential hit tool. But I think highly of Amaya......

I do really like Amaya, so I'm going to come across sounding like negative nancy here, but it should be noted that Callis is roughly talking about a ceiling there (he did use the word optimistically, so it's not necessarily ceiling, but at least, more of a high point). If his ceiling is "6 bat, 4 power, 55 run, 5 glove, 5 arm and arm", and he reaches said ceiling ... great.

I'm actually surprised that he only gave a 4 on power as an optimistic point. 4 sounds more in line with the reports last year ... but this late in the season, it's hard to believe that the guys at BA are basing things off of last year's reports.

Wouldn't 40 power put him around 12-15 HR in the majors?

I tend to think of 40 power as more 10-15, but that may just be some random idea that came into my head at some point. Sure, average power. It sounded like, and I've been quite busy of late so maybe I missed some stuff, but it sounded like his power potential might have inched a touch higher this year. 40/average power was sort of the projection last year, and the snippets out there this summer seemed to suggest that he might have a touch more relative to what his potential ceiling might be.

With a guy like Amaya, it's hard to really put a number on his tools, because he's so young and nothing really stands out. When a player is that young, I feel like the only thing you can put an accurate number on is the standout tools (i.e. Sano's 70-80 power).

Cubs 2012 first-round draft selection Albert Almora, who hit .321 in 33 Minor League games this year, took batting practice at Wrigley Field before today’s game and hit two home runs to deep left field.

Pretty much, yeah.

I can see calling Justin Marra a prospect at catcher. He's 19 and OPS'd .947 with average to above average defensive tools.

Clearly the infield was filled with them. Vogelbach (19) killed NWL pitching. Candelario (18) and Amaya (19) are clearly deserving. Stephen Bruno (21) is a year old for this league but he hit like he belonged in a Low-A so you can call him a prospect and Marco, who turned 20 at season's end, still retains prospect status, though it waned a bit this year.

But unless you consider Rock Shoulders (20) a true LFer, I'd say Theo was one position short. Almora (18) and Trey Martin (19) are the only guys I'd consider prospects in Boise's outfield at the end of the year.

How many consider Shoulders a true prospect at 1B after hitting .250/.342/.447/.789 while at an age appropriate level? I guess he's certainly at least a borderline one and too young to count out. And does anybody have any info on Rock's ability to play LF? Thanks.

@sahadevsharma: Soler's warming up w/ team, looks just as big as guys like Rizzo & LaHair. He fits right in & will only get bigger on a US training program

Yeah, Bruno and Contreras primarily played RF. I do believe Shoulders is a minor prospect (say top 50), not someone to give up on yet.

Wow. And he doesn't turn 19 until next April.

If Saturday’s batting practice session is any indication, the $30 million the Cubs spent to sign Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler could be well worth it.

Soler worked out with the Cubs at Wrigley Field before Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh – the first time he’s ever been in a Major League ballpark. And he put on a show.

With President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein and the entire Cubs’ brass standing behind the batting cage, Soler took about 30 swings and hit five home runs, two that left the park and sailed to Waveland Avenue. Most of his other swings produced hard line drives to left field.

Soler was trying to whip his bat around so hard that it hit the batting cage net several times on his follow-through. The baseball cliché “the ball jumps off his bat” definitely seems to apply to Soler.

“I felt good,” Soler said through interpreter Luis Eljaua, a special assistant to the general manager. “At first, I was a little intimidated. I’ve never been to a big-league ballpark. After a little while, I felt comfortable.”

The Cubs signed Soler, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds but looks bigger, to a nine-year, $30 million contract this summer. Soler played 14 games for the Cubs’ rookie-league team in Arizona and 20 games for their low Single-A affiliate Peoria. In 149 at-bats, he hit .299 with five home runs, 25 RBI and had an .832 OPS.

When will he be playing with the Cubs?

"As long as I learn to make adjustments, the time will come when I'm hear full-time,” he said.

lol at bold

If you listened to how he said it, he clearly meant "hear", just trying to quote accurately.

Ah, that makes sense. In that case, if you consider Marco a prospect, then yes, they did have one at every position.

Marco is definitely a prospect. If there was an iffy guy for me, it'd have been Contreras. But he showed solid enough defense to go with an improving bat, to where he'd probably make my top 40 or so. And I have Vogelbach, Amaya, Marco, Candelario, Bruno, and Almora all in my top 30 solidly and Martin creeps in on occasion himself.

Marco Hernandez is more of a prospect than Bruno, Martin, Shoulders and Contreras (or Marra).
