Wasn't sure where else to put this... little tidbit on Vizcaino

The most important prospect the Cubs acquired was starter Arodys Vizcaino, who is still rehabbing from elbow surgery.

Vizcaino joined the team this week and is scheduled to be ready to start pitching again by spring training. But like Jeff Samardzija this season, Vizcaino will be watched closely and his innings will be monitored in 2013.

"I'm sure his innings will be whatever next year — 100? I don't know the exact number we're going to end up with, but it's not going to be a full, blowout scale with him," Sveum said "He's so young (21), you're going to baby that situation as much as you can and get him really, really ready for (2014)."

They are definitely looking at him as a starter, based on this quote.

If I remember correctly, I think McLeod indicated as much around the time of the trade. It might've been one of Thoyer, though.

Villanueva doesn't have a crazy ceiling, but he has a good defensive profile at 3B, some legit pop in the bat, and ++ makeup. #Cubs

@ProfessorParks

#Cubs 3B prospect Christian Villanueva was impressive w/ the bat yesterday for Obregon. Showing off his + bat speed; squaring solid velo

Where is he playing? Had no idea.

Mexican Pacific League, I'd guess.

Logan Watkins evidently has been named Cubs Minor League POY, according to a congrats tweet from Michael Brenly.

That's a sad statement about the upper levels of our farm system. I'm not sure who decides this, but assuming it comes from within the organization, wouldn't that make it a pretty safe bet to be rostered and protected from the Rule 5?

Being named the Pitcher of The Year in the Cubs Minor League System this year is like being the smartest kid in remedial classes

Yeah, but that's certainly changing now. Next year will be very interesting. Honestly, Struck had a better year than I thought too. I guess he should get rostered too. Still doubt he winds up more than a reliever, but he had a very solid AA season for being 22. They really rushed him the previous year. Guess I forgot that.

It's a better honor than last year, when a reliever was named Pitcher of the Year (Beliveau).

Fangraphs interviews Almora

Some areas I liked...

On studying the opposing pitcher: “We have video here and watch it constantly, every day. I have an iPad and it has what I’ve done against that pitcher multiple times. It helps, of course.

“I like to see the way a pitcher works and how he throws to you — how he’s been placing pitches with you. Stuff like that. Every day is different, but sometimes you have a better idea of what’s going to happen and what he’s going to throw.”

On pitch recognition: “What I’m looking for varies throughout the count. You start out 0-0 and you have to get your pitch, the pitch you know you can do damage with. You can’t swing at his pitch. But I just like to focus on seeing the ball and hitting the ball. If it’s a good pitch that I think I can hit, I’ll swing at it. I’m very aggressive when it comes to that.

“You have to read [the pitch] out of the pitcher’s hand. You can’t just go up there and pretend… I don’t know how to explain it, but the thing is very difficult. You have to see how he’s ending up. Is he ending up tall? Is he ending up down? Are his pitches staying up or going low? Where is his release point? There are a lot of different things.”

On plate discipline: “That’s something I’ve been working on a lot. This is the first year of my professional career and I’ve been very aggressive. I haven’t walked a lot — as much as I need to, or as much as I want to. I’ve just been very aggressive. Anything I’ve been seeing that’s in the strike zone, I’ve been swinging at. That’s been both good and bad.

“For next year, and in instructs, I’m trying to be patient. I want to do a better job of taking pitches and not trying to do damage with everything. I’ve been a little too anxious. There have been ups and downs with this being the first year of my career, but I’m starting to get it. I’m trying to slow the game down as much as possible.

“I’m fortunate to have [hitting coach] Bill Buckner here with me. He’s teaching me and giving me pointers. He’ll come to me, or I’ll go to him. If I‘m doing something, I’ll ask him if it’s working better, or he’ll start talking to me. We have a great relationship and have been working hard together.”

I absolutely love this approach and mature level of thinking. Having the perspective to look at your approach has to be tough when you're that young. I'd like to think that I would look at things from a similar perspective if put in his position ( with talent, of course) but then I look back at some of the dumb decisions I've made and I'm not so sure. I love what I hear from this kid. I sure hope he can keep it up. He sounds like he'd be an easy player to cheer for.

I'm pretty sure he's taking into consideration baserunning and defense, that's why he says that Vogelbach barely beat out Hak-Ju Lee for #50 in the comments. It's more of a "Top-50 not-pitchers" list.

Wait, let me get this straight, if he's talking top 50 position players overall, and Vogelbach beat out Hak-Ju Lee, that's pretty impressive. Lee had somewhat of an off year with the bat, but he wasn't terrible for a 21 year old legit SS in AA (.261/.336/.360).

Are you saying Sickels ranks Vogelbach ahead of BA's #44 overall prospect of last year?

Yes. Although that's more of an indictment of Lee's preseason ranking than calling Vogelbach a star.

Cool. I'll take it, especially from someone like Sickels.

I never agreed with the hype on Lee. I thought he belonged in the back end of the top 100. So this is still a meaningful statement for me.
