understandable, but they havent been really talked about much at all..

maybe they will be prospect sleepers :ninja:

BA listed mcdaniel a sleeper in the 2009 handbook.

still, he wasn't listed among the cubs' top 30 prospects, and there are 30 organizations, so you're talking about nearly 1000 minor leaguers that they evaluated as being better than mcdaniel. if you want info on guys like that, it's more likely to come from a cub-specific newsletter or website than BA, who covers college, high school and minor league baseball.

With the way he's pitched thus far this season, McDaniel is likely pitching his way into BA's Cubs top 10 list.

Searle will probably get consideration, too, since he's been performing pretty well in the FSL as a 19 year old.

Not sure how I missed it but Josh Vitters wasn't the only third baseman in the Cubs system to win player of the week honors:

SL Player of the Week:

Marquez Smith, Tennessee

.387 (12-31), 9 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB, 9 SO, 0 SB, .742 SLG

Smokies third baseman Marquez Smith opened the week with a memorable doubleheader, finishing 6-for-8 on the day with two homers, five runs scored and four RBIs in Chattanooga. The 24-year-old Clemson product added another homer and a double against Birmingham three days later. His nine runs scored led the league last week, while his .742 slugging percentage was good for second.

Cubs fans everywhere!!! (everywhere): How about Vitters and Fox?!?!?! what is going on with the cubs minor league water? I think Bauer might have mutated the virus to give cubs minor leaguers super human powers! Seriously though, what can we expect from Fox now that he has been called up and what are the odds we deal Vitters in a Peavy trade in your opinion?

Jim Callis: (2:14 PM ET ) Josh Vitters is having the breakthrough expected of him, showing why he was drafted third overall a couple of years ago. Jake Fox has legitimate power and was hitting as well as anyone in the minors, but I'm not sure how the Cubs are going to squeeze his bat into the lineup.

BA Prospect Hot Sheet

No. 3 JOSH VITTERS, 3B

CUBS

Team: Low Class A Peoria (Midwest)

Age: 19

Why He's Here: .391/.440/.783 (9-for-23), 3 HR, 6 R, 5 RBIs, 1 BB, 3 SO

The Scoop: Vitters is going to hate to see the month of May end. The Cubs' 2007 first-round pick continued his demolition of Midwest League pitching this past week, slugging another three home runs to give him 10 for the month and 11 for the season, putting him second in the MWL. Vitters' power hasn't come at the expense of his average either, as he hit .400/.423/.750 for the month and bumped up his season line to .362/.393/.620, putting his average third in the league. He hasn't toned down his approach any, as he drew just his fourth walk of the season Tuesday, but opposing pitchers still haven't been able to get much past him.

Down from 1st last week. Might be time to trade him, selling high.

BP's 2008 draft review of the cubs:

Top Pick: Since suffering from a case of Steve Blass disease last year after signing, first-round pick Andrew Cashner is throwing more strikes while being slowly converted to a starter's role, with a 2.41 ERA in six games for High-A Daytona.

Movin' On Up: Third-round pick Chris Carpenter has a first-round body and velocity, but he also has a long medical record that includes two elbow surgeries. Healthy so far in 2009, he's struck out 43 over 40 1/3 innings at Single-A Peoria while limiting the league to a .181 batting average.

Disappointing: Second-round pick Aaron Shafer has seen his velocity dip significantly since his time at Wichita State, and even more disturbing than his 5.60 ERA at Peoria is his low total of 20 strikeouts in 35 1/3 frames.

I seen Shafer throw against ISU his final year of college and was not impressed as he hasn't been the same pitcher he was in his early WSU career, it was evident last year. It's similar to Brownlie, IMO with slightly less hype and financial commitment.

From last week's Hot Sheet chat:

Jack (Toronto): Moustakas or Vitters?

Ben Badler: Vitters has a great swing, but I'll take Moustakas.

Jensen (Chicago): Will Andrew Cashner ever sniff the Cubs rotation?

Ben Badler: It's possible, but the bullpen is more likely

Corey (IL): Complete this: Vitters is currently a top ___ prospect.

Kevin Goldstein: 20

Heh:

Henry (bedroom): If Josh Vitters were called up today, would he hold his own or be overwhelmed (if it's possible to overwhelm that bat)?

Kevin Goldstein: He would be absolutely horrible. He's in the Midwest League, it's all about potential. No way, no how he could hit in the big leagues right now.

Derek (OH): The Reds recently signed former 1st round pick Mark Pawelek. Any chance that he fulfills that old potential?

Kevin Goldstein: If he did, you think he would have been released this spring and been looking for a job for two months?

Top 2008 post-3rd round picks (who didn't get over slot money):

8. Jay Jackson, rhp, Cubs (9th round, 281st overall)

A two-way player at Furman, Jackson needed only a couple of months to look like a steal for the Cubs in the ninth round. In 50 innings last year between short-season, low and high Class A, Jackson sported a 2.88 ERA with 70 strikeouts and 13 walks in 50 innings. The Cubs aggressively jumped Jackson to Double-A this year, and he’s shown he has the stuff to be successful, primarily with a fastball in the low 90s and a mid-80s slider.

No Cubs in this weeks Hot Sheet but a former Cub prospect made the team photo:

Double-A Midland C Josh Donaldson joined the Athletics in last July's Rich Harden deal, and he responded by bashing high Class A pitching. Donaldson has posted an impressive .284/.294/.483 batting line in 176 at-bats this season, and he has a good arm behind the plate. He's walking in 15.5 percent of his plate appearances this season, and if he can sustain his batting eye with solid defense he should move quickly through the organization.

That was a typo. Obviously if he's walking in 15.5 percent of his plate appearances his OBP wouldn't be that close to his average.

His current line is .284/.400/.483

How would Donaldson rank if he were still with us?

Behind Vitters, Cashner, and Samardzija definitely. After that he fits into the debate anywhere.

I'd rank Jackson ahead of him (and I'd rank Jackson ahead of Cashner).

As would I, but I'm trying to guess how BA looks at it.

Higher ranked than Castillo and Clevenger I'd assume?
