  1. 1. Do you refer to the cubs as "the cubs" or "us/we"?

Question might be a little hard to understand. Here's an example: when I was telling my friend about the game yesterday, I said our centerfielder made a great catch, not the Cub's centerfielder. Basically, do you talk as if you're part of the team? Edited by Ski

I say it both ways at times. Not including that as an option is a fatal flaw in this poll. I doubt that anybody refers to them EXCLUSIVELY as "we" rather than "the Cubs."

I believe I tend to say "we" during games and "the Cubs" outside of them.

"We're hitting the cover off the ball."

"If the Cubs get a fifth starter..."

Same here.

I'm pretty much the same way.

That sums it up just about perfect. I was having trouble figuring out when I used what but that sounds about right. I will say we at times outside of games like when someone asks what place are the Cubs in.

whatever, i've been rooting for the cubs for almost 30 years. if neifi perez, jose macias, todd hundley and lenny harris were able to say "we" when they were on the team, then i'm allowed to say it too. the cubs mean a lot more to me than they ever meant to those losers.

I definitely never used "we" in that context in 2006.

I only say "we/us" for IU sports, unless it's a major happening. AKA when the Bears went to the Superbowl, I was screaming "we're going to Miami!"

i never say "we/us" and i hate it when others do. you're not on the team, or associated with its operations in any way.

i guess i don't really mind people saying we if it's their school team, but i still don't do it.

I do it, and I find the objections to be asinine and pretentious.

The entirety of organized sports beyond the scholastic level is based on the idea that fans identify themselves as part of a group supporting a single team, that the team represents them and their interests. Choice of pronoun reflects this.
