Also what does DeRosa have to do with Peavy? Are we still pretending those prospects were acquired for a Peavy trade?

Are you still pretending that it doesn't have a chance?

Why do you think DeRosa was traded?

Pretending what doesn't have a chance? The Peavy trade? I never said anything about that.

Why do you think DeRosa was traded

The same reason that I thought everyone understood by now....for money and to "get more left handed". But mostly for money.

I didn't think anyone still pretended it was for Peavy

He's been ridiculous in Spring Training. Wish he was 5 inches taller and 20 more pounds and he'd be a beast... can't believe a guy smaller than myself can generate that much power.

Jimmie Wynn says hello.

Hell, even CPatt could generate quite a bit of power.

If I can be contrarian, this is terrible news that this was ever considered a competition.

Eh, competition never hurt anybody. If there was no competition, and Fontenot's and Miles's numbers were reversed, how would you feel then?

I'd be really annoyed that this organization would probably be stupid enough to start Aaron Miles everyday.

It's not like Mike Fontenot is a tried and true stud 2B. I don't mind that there is competition. It's going to end up as some sort of platoon eventually anyway. The problem was getting Miles, but Fontenot doesn't deserve a 162 game job anyway.

At least Fontenot doesn't have a proven track record of sub-mediocrity against righties. Giving Aaron [expletive] Miles a chance to win a full time starting job would be awful.

I don't know how much of a chance he was actually given to win a full-time starting job. I really don't think he had one. They have 3 guys for 2 positions, and none of them are 162 game players.

I want Fontenot starting against lefties as well just so we don't have a 100% RH lineup against lefties. I don't think that's good

In principle, I agree, but then again, I'm pretty sure we absolutely crushed lefties last year. It could've just been skewed by Pittsburgh, though.

At least Fontenot has some upside. With Miles, what you see is what you get, and it's likely to be jack [expletive].

Miles taking at bats from Fontenot v. LHP and occasionally Theriot v. RHP is not a big deal.

He says he sees about 350-400 at-bats from Fontenot. If that happens, that means Miles is playing against lefties.

Posted
A platoon is fine, Fontenot hasn't fared so well against LHP in his short MLB career. Plus, it's Lou, so he's going to change his mind a bunch of times. What ends up happening is much more important than Lou's intentions for PT.

I think there's a pretty good shot Fontenot could at least match Miles' career .704 OPS vs lefties.

Plus if Miles is in there it means we won't have a single lefty in the lineup against LHP.

Maybe he will. Even if he doesn't get a ton of opportunity, the difference between what Fontenot will likely do with those limited at bats and what Miles will do is small enough to be more than covered by variance.

I don't really care if there's no left handed hitters in the lineup against LHP. First of all, if Fukudome starts hot or Fontenot earns a full time gig, that might not even be true. Secondly, I'm not worried about it for relief pitching purposes since our LH side of the bench is much stronger(Fukudome, Fontenot, Hoffpauir), plus Bradley and Miles are switch hitters. And thirdly, unless there's more evidence than a quote from Andy Pettitte saying he's more comfortable against all RHP, I find it hard to believe there's a significant impact to having a solid RH lineup against LHP.

Yea... why is that really stupid?

I agree it doesn't sound stupid to me either.

Fontenot-247/305/675 - last two years against LH pitching

Miles-297/374/732- last three years against LH pitching

So against LH pitching we could get either simliar production to 08 Theriot from 2b, or simliar production to 08 Cedeno? I don't think it will be a strict platoon, but this is what I think Lou will usually go with. Playing Fontenot everyday will probably make him closer to a 750-760 OPS guy, but play him against mostly RH pitching, and in a platoon. We could get close to 800 OPS from the 2b postion, even with Miles OPS bring it down. It still won't bring it down nearly as low as Fontenot would.

It's not just Pettitte. I've heard many people say the same thing. It seems like we mash lefties but then anytime we face a decent one, we have all sorts of problems.
