Yea... why is that really stupid?

I agree it doesn't sound stupid to me either.

Fontenot-247/305/675 - last two years against LH pitching

Miles-297/374/732- last three years against LH pitching

So against LH pitching we could get either simliar production to 08 Theriot from 2b, or simliar production to 08 Cedeno? I don't think it will be a strict platoon, but this is what I think Lou will usually go with. Playing Fontenot everyday will probably make him closer to a 750-760 OPS guy, but play him against mostly RH pitching, and in a platoon. We could get close to 800 OPS from the 2b postion, even with Miles OPS bring it down. It still won't bring it down nearly as low as Fontenot would.

I'm not really opposed to Miles playing vs lefties, but cmon, Fontenot has like 8 career ABs vs lefties.

The third slash is supposed to be slg%, not OPS.

But yeah those numbers are a little skewed. Miles' are pumped up a lot by his never-going-to-happen-again 2008. The year before that he only had a .704 OPS.

Fontenot doesn't have nearly a big enough sample size to be really putting any stock in those major league numbers numbers. He has 73 at-bats spread out over 2 season. In his last 2 seasons at Iowa he actually hit better against LHP (small sample size again though).

I want to see what Fontenot can do with a full season's worth of at-bats. I want him playing every day. I don't want him playng a couple games and then having to sit on the bench for a day or 2. I want to see what he can do. I don't think putting Miles in there to maybe put up a .750 OPS is worth taking that chance away from Fontenot.

But in 06 he hit 291/378/738 against LH pitching as well, so it wasn't just 08. Plus even though is OPS wasn't good against LH pitchers in 07, he still had a 368 OBP against them. I don't have a problem with giving Fontenot a chance against LH pitchers, but from what we have to go on right now. Miles looks like better bet against LH pitching. So I don't have a problem with Lou going with a platoon.

But that 3 year total is still pumped up by 2008. Look at his splits last year. They're almost identical. His LH splits aren't better than his RH splits. They're all high because of the career year, not because he started hitting lefties better than righties. If his overall numbers were at his normal career averages, his LH splits would have been also. His career splits are pretty even.

Either way, it's not the point. I just don't see the point of taking Fontenot out of the lineup every few days so we can maybe get a .750 OPS in there. Where is the upside of that? I think there's more upside in letting Fontenot play every day and seeing what he can do. THAT has some real upside to it. LET HIM PLAY.

Miles looks like better bet against LH pitching.

I don't really know that that's true.
