Vizcaino with a brutal 5th. He walked 3, gave up a hit and 2 runs and didn't get out of the inning.

2-2 after 5.

In other news Gallardo got knocked around by the Royals:

0.2ip 4h 7r 5er 3bb 0k 0hr.

Apparently weeks committed a rather key error on a DP ball and things blew up from there.

Hill takes a big step forward in the backup catcher race with a 2 for 2 day with a double and a walk so far. That's the day after Piniella had this to say:

"It's almost to the point that whoever can get a base hit once in a while [will get the job]," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Saturday. "[Hill and Bako] are both really good catch and throw guys, both call good games."

Another terribly played game today. Kevin Hart looked atrocious in his inning of work, 3 BB and Grand Slam.

Marshall was a bright spot as well as Neil Cotts and Jose Ascanio.

Not much to report on the offensive side. Thanks for making my trip so enjoyable Cobs.

I am very excited about what Schlitter, Ascanio and Patton could become for the Cubs.

I dont know if we'll ever truely find out about Patton. I know Lou seems to like him and all, but as a Rule 5, if he doesnt stay on the active roster, he goes back to whoever we got him from, and unless someone like Gaudin or Vizcaino really look like crap the next few weeks, I dont think he has a roster spot.

I was at the game and Man what a crappy crowd. There were no fans cheering or anything. Really "churchlike".

Hart in the 9th was directly out of "Major League". He was nowhere near the plate and then grooved one for the granny. The filler players on the cubs have no chance. They looked flat and had no energy.

Some fun stuff though. The clubhouse door was open for an hour before the game and the guys kept going back & forth. The gym backdoor was open too and Sean Marshall was there near the door riding the bike. Really nice guy.

Fitch was in great shape and the guys were having a good time.

In a sunday newspaper article, the Cubs seem pretty serious in moving from Mesa. After seeing Surprise stadium and Ho Ho Kam back to back, I don't blame them. Ho Ho Kam is seriously outdated and has nothing for a typical spring facility. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Cubs move to a place like goodyear.

Plus Mesa is the furtherest east of all the complexes in the Valley of the Sun (granted Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe are close by).

Arizona Phil / The Cub Reporter[/url]"]Luis Vizcaino entered the game in the 5th, and did not pitch well (0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 ER .3 BB, 0 K, 31 pitches - only 15 strikes, 0/2 GO/FO). He seemed to be visibly pissed with home plate umpire Brian Gorman early in the inning (it did look like he was getting squeezed a bit) as he walked Chris Davis and Jarrod Saltalamacchia with one out. But Vizcaino got rookie SS Elvis Andrus (who would make two outstanding leaping catches in the field later in the game) on an infield pop up for the second out and looked like he might be able to get out of the inning, but then he walked PH Andruw Jones on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. After a visit to the mound by Pitching Coach Larry Rothschild, Ian Kinslser lined Vizcaino's very next pitch (#31 for the inning) to CF, driving in two runs and tying the game at two.

...

Ascanio was just plain filthy, striking out Michael Young, Josh Hamilton, and Marlon Byrd on 11 pitches (he threw only one ball). Ascanio had to be throwing in the mid-90's, and the bottom was dropping out of his hard-slider.

Cotts was almost just as good (14 pitches - 10 strikes), striking out Chris Davis, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and PH Justin Smoak, athough he did surrender a harmless Elvis Andrus two-out bloop single along the way. Cotts had outstanding velocity today.

I think Ascanio really opened some eyes today, and I suspect Cotts has probably cemented his #1 bullpen lefty gig (although there isn't really much competition for the job, unless you count Marshall as a possible reliever),
