Free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez has turned down the Dodgers' latest offer, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The one-year, $25 million proposal was made during a face-to-face meeting Sunday night between Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti and Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras.

God, how I'd love it if Opening Day rolls around and Manny Ramirez remains unsigned. What kind of donkey-butt arrogance does it take to turn down $25 million?! Unbelievable.

why all the hate? don't you think it's more about the years than the dollars per? regardless of his age and/or the bad economy, manny sure as hell still deserves more than a one-year deal. he's probably looking to sign the last contract of his career so he doesn't have to go through the whole free-agent process again.

i don't see the problem. it's a lot more complicated than just calling him an a-hole claiming that $25 million isn't enough for him.

Manny has put himself in this position by "being Manny" in the past. Nobody is willing to trust him to a lengthy deal.

That said...I don't blame him at all for holding out for a better deal.

certainly there's reason to be cautious with manny, but i still think expecting him to accept a one-year deal is absurd.

If he doesn't do what he believes is in his best interest, he's not being a good-faith actor in the free market. Only a communist wouldn't hate on a guy for doing something that patriotic.

Maybe he doesn't want to sign with the Dodgers?

I don't understand - take the one year deal and another hack at free agency next year. I guess he wants a long term deal, but we all know clubs are hesitant to do that with the stuff he pulled in Boston the last 4 years he had there.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out....

I don't see anyone giving him the 2 or 3 years this late into things. Hopefully no body signs him so he learns his lesson. He could've gotten his two year deal (albeit with an option) with the Dodgers, but he declined it. He could've gotten $25M for a year, but he declined it.

I don't understand what's going to keep him motivated once he has his money. "Hey hey I'm Manny! I'm unna lie down on the ball in the outfield! Maybe I play, maybe I don't! Manny being Manny huzzah!"

I wish we had Manny being Manny on our team

I don't know what it's going to take to sign him.

All I know is that Manny is going to be a Yankee.

I really don't see that happening. They already have a ton of outfielders/DHs. If they wanna spend more money, I'd go after Sheets if I were them.

On XM yesterday they were saying that per the MLB front office the Yankees were over the limit on type A and type B free agents and could not sign any more this offseason. It was in relation to the possibly signing of Juan Cruz. I am not sure on the rules and even the two hosts of the show weren't claiming they knew for sure (I guess it is a rather complicated issue) but that someone had asked the commisioner's office and was told that the Yankees were at the limit and could only sign Pettitte because he was their own free agent.

EDIT - here is what they were talking about:

The most commonly held misconception of this offseason is that the Yankees could have signed pitcher Ben Sheets or could still sign left-fielder Manny Ramirez if only there were a few million dollars remaining in the Steinbrenner bank.

Both assumptions are incorrect. According to the Basic Agreement, and confirmed by a top Major League Baseball official, once the Yankees signed CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira, they had signed their quota of Type A or Type B free agents under the collectively bargained rules established by management and the Players Association.

All three were Type A free agents who played for other teams last season aside from the Yankees. The Yankees could re-sign their own Type A or Type B free agents without it affecting the quota.

Under the rules, "if there are from 39 to 62 [Type A and B] players [during a given offseason], no team can sign more than three."
