MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers' flagship radio station has dramatically shortened the list of potential replacements for departed play-by-play man Jim Powell and could be down to a single finalist.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Friday that the field was down to two -- Chicago's Cory Provus and Arizona's Jeff Munn. Both men host pre- and post-game radio shows and do occasional play-by-play for their club's network of radio affiliates, and would be moving to a higher-profile position as Milwaukee's No. 2 radio voice.

Wow, that'd be a nice leap for Provus. He's ok at play by play, but not great.

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring for Cory's job if he leaves.

Andy Provus did a very nice job filling in on WGN Radio when he a Northwestern basketball game a month or two ago. He and Masur are good basketball PBP guys. Provus probably still has some growing to do with Cubs broadcasts, but the potential is probably there.

Provus sounds like Thom Brennamen to me. Fortunately the content is different but the delivery and cadence are very similar.

I can see the similarities to Thom.

Powell left Milwaukee? Drag. He's really good. The Brewers can have Cory Provus if they want, I guess.

He left to become the radio voice of the Braves. He's a UGA grad and originally from the area, so when the job opened up he was rumored as the leading candidate from the start. Definitely stinks, because he was always great to listen to and you could always count on him to correct some of the things Uecker said. I still love Uecker, but he's getting to the point where he's constantly confusing one player for another, stays silent for long periods of time during big plays, and can't really judge flyballs anymore (he'll launch into his HR call when the ball is about to be caught on the warning track). No one's going to tell Ueck he needs to go, though, which is why Powell leaving is such a hit. The TV crew is bad enough (although surprisingly better than most of the other crews I've seen on MLB.TV over the years), we don't need to suffer through a lackluster radio team. Hopefully the new guy comes in and gels well with Uecker.

I wonder who the Cubs will replace Provost with? Has there been any rumors or rumblings?

Depends on who wants to be the guy to caters to the needs of Ron Santo. Sorry but that has to get old after a while so good for Corey on pulling down a full time gig.

I'll volunteer.
