Jeff Kent, who built a strong Hall of Fame case while setting the Major League Baseball record for career home runs by a second baseman, will formally announce his retirement Thursday at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers said.

The story headline asks if he's a Hall of Famer. I don't think so, but it might be a decent debate.

i think he deserves consideration. pretty amazing power numbers for a 2B

quite the convincing argument there!

i'm not dextermorgan, buddy, i'm not so easily riled. nice try starting trouble again though

but i'm feeling generous, so:

85 more hits

157 more doubles

95 more HR

457 more RBI

40 more walks

60 more points of OPS

9 more points of OPS+

than Ryne Sandberg, in just ~100 more AB's

starting trouble??? god why is everybody so edgy here? it was just a joke!

that is quite the argument, however. but the question remains... does joe morgan think he's worthy?

considering the # of arguments you've gotten into recently, it's easy to mistake your "joke" for being a jerk.

Isn't one of the knocks on Kent that he was lead-footed in his defense? Maybe that was just later in his career and I'm not remembering correctly.

probably, and I don't know the fielding stats enough to compare him to, say, Sandberg in that regard. but to have that many offensive stats better than a recently inducted 2B (in a comparable # of PA's) makes me say yes on Kent

Yes, I think he's a Hall of Famer. You have to look at potential HOFers according to their position, and Kent is certainly one of the top second baggers ever according to the stats.

Among second basemen:

HR: 1st

SLG: 2nd

RBI: 3rd

Doubles: 4th

OPS+: 6th

BA: 9th

Hits: 9th

Runs: 10th

Note: I do think Kent is a HOF, but........

Those numbers are kinda inflated because teams would pitch around Bonds to face Kent. While Dawson was really good for the Cubs, he was no Barry Bonds. So YOU could make a case that Bonds made Kent a HOF. With that said, when opportunity knocks......and Kent definately took advantage of the opportunity of player with Bonds.

a lot of players were protected by other HoF'ers

That is why I said that I believe Kent is a HOF. But I know stats are on Kent's side, but IMO Sandberg was a better all-around 2B then Kent.

By stats only -- no doubt he's a HoF'er.

I wonder if he has the "wow" factor that some players have. His attitude probably won't help him out. So does he deserve it? I say "yes." Will he get in? I really don't know.

As for comparing him to Sandberg --- I think they were different players. Sandberg was a top of the order hitter. Sandberg was a complete player --- hitting, base running / speed, and defense. Kent was a middle of the order guy who wasn't all that flashy with the glove and to my knowledge was no more than average (if that ) on the bases. Both did what their teams asked of them and then some.

I don't think you can go wrong with having either guy as your 2b and I'm REALLY biased towards Ryno. . . . . and I can't stand Jeff Kent.

No. Joe Morgan thinks that the only second baseman worthy of the Hall is Joe Morgan.

He should get in and I think he will after a couple times on the ballot.

He's got the MVP award and five AS game appearances and that, combined with the stats and how he ranks compared to other second basemen, will be more than enough to get noticed by the voters. He probably won't get in on the first ballot because I don't think he's got that type of reputation, but I'd say he'll get in there.
