Young has the same limits defensively as Theriot. He's already 31, and at this stage of his career, I'm not sure he's any better than Theriot. He probably has a little more power, but he makes 16 million a year until 2013. I don't think he's worth that. I'd have to pass.

Id definitely take him over Theriot

Why?

Whatever theyd want would be whatever the Pads want, especially with the Rangers being such a pitching starved team, theyd want the same young pitching the Pads want. I guess the bottom line is our farm system isnt deep enough to land us 2 star players. Even 1 is a problem. Aside from that, our only really tradeably players, without NTCs and without eating a ton of salary are Marmol and Soto, which I would hope that JH would never consider givign up, especilly for a guy like Young, who would be somewhat of an upgrade over Theriot, but not enough to make him worth it.

On a reputation v. production basis, Young is one of the more overrated players in the game.

AMEN

He's 32, his numbers away from Texas are mediocre, and his contract is terrible. I wouldn't even take him if he were put on waivers because of that contract.

Living in Dallas, he strikes me as a bit high maintenance too. Not necessarily a team cancer or a really bad guy, just someone who thinks he's a much bigger star than he actually is having been the big fish in a small pond for a few years. It's seems like he sometimes expects the Rangers FO to come to him before they make any move to get his stamp of approval because he's the team star. And now he throws a hissy because the Rangers brought up moving him to 3rd? It was painfully obvious that he's no longer even an average defensive SS last year. I would like to think someone who gave his employer a 96 OPS+ in return for a new 5 year/$80 million contract extension might show a little more flexibility, modesty and humility. Edited by Elrhino

I didn't realize how much of a decline he's had. But middle infield is a young man's position. He's in his early 30's and has averaged 158 games the past 7 years and 709 PA. He might have a little Jose Vidro in him.

I'd rather fist tubgirl than trade for Young. If Young's contract were 5M/year instead of whatever massive amount it actually is, I'd take him...but wouldn't trade anything for him. Pretty sure he's always been below-average at SS, and it's only going to get worse from here on out.

So it's come to this. Players that have signed longterm extensions for megabucks are demanding trades before year one of said extension.

16 million a year lol

Exactly. And part of the reason the Rangers are still not competing. I like Young and all, but at Derosa type money.

Some dude on XM this morning suggested a Soriano for Young trade.

He said he's just thinking outloud --- it's not as much as a rumor.

It's too bad that Soriano has that NTC, otherwise I'd love to see this 3 way deal:

Baltimore gets Michael Young and Felix Pie

Texas gets Alfonso Soriano

Cubs get Brian Roberts and Garrett Olson

Baltimore can afford the contract and aren't they in dire need of a SS? Texas must be able to afford the contract, since Young's contract practically mirrors Soriano's. Cubs sign Roberts to an extension and then include Olson in a deal for Peavy.

There's just this one slight problem. Soriano's NTC.

until I realized that young made 16 million bucks, I thought a soriano / young trade followed by a Dunn signing was great.

oh well
