Tribune Subscriptions & Individual/Season Tickets

I don't see where this has been discussed, but it doesn't sound like a good thing for the average fan. It looks like Sam Zell trying to squeeze every penny out of the team before the sale is complete.

Tribune Co. and the Chicago Cubs on Friday announced unprecedented plans to open the season ticket waiting list to the open market. Beginning in January, fans of the Tribune Co.-owned Cubs can buy their way to the top of the list with the purchase of subscriptions to the Chicago Tribune.
Cubs officials say a similar system will be implemented for the sale of individual game tickets. Rather than receive a randomized place in a virtual waiting room when the tickets are made available, online customers can purchase issues of Vine Line, the Cubs' official magazine, to improve their place in the virtual line.

I can go along with this plan for season tickets, since the waiting list is so long that people at the end won't reach the front for several lifetimes, but I have a philosophical problem with individual game tickets being distributed based on a subscription/point system. Raise ticket prices all you want, but don't make me pay for the "right" to buy tickets.

I'm the exact opposite. You'll be able to get around the VWR problem. The plan for season tickets is downright disgusting. You'll have a situation where only businesses are getting the new season ticket openings. If you read closely they mention that cash in addition to subscriptions would be a way to earn your place. That is absurd. I've been on the list for a number of years now and the thought that some company can jump in front of me because they want be able to schmooz clients rather than watch the game is downright apalling, even if I wasn't going to get on until my sixties anyway.

I suppose I could get a subscription and throw it in my waiting area and write it off. But that doesn't look like it'd be enough from having people jump ahead of me. F- this corporate greed which flies in the face of the standards currently in place.

If it makes you feel any better, a lot of the business people who are buying tickets either use them personally but write them off as a business expense, or just hand them out to employees who want to go to games. I think the non-fan schmoozing aspect is a bit overblown. And if they are schmoozing, it's more effective if the client you bring is a Cubs fan.

But I agree with the negative stance on this.

I feel like coporate schmoozing is more of an NBA thing.

I have to disagree. As a younger financial advisor I see the older advisors take their clients out to a nice warm ball game much more then to the Bulls game or something like that. You want to be able to talk to your clients a bit, and baseball is the perfect game to do so when things are a little slower then a Bulls game. Ofcourse most of the advisors in my office are Sox fans and they share season tickets there, and most of the time I am able to scoop in and go for free. To bad they were not Cubs fans, I would never leave.

Haha, this forum got torn to shreds by that author. I guess I didn't read closely enough to consider whether it was satire. After all the zany marketing ideas the Cubs have introduced over the years, I guess it just seemed like this was yet another one.

If that blog is really the home of intelligent thought like he seems to imply it is, I guess we can live without his uninformed input on this board.

If it was satire, isn't it supposed to be something kind of funny? How are we supposed to know it's supposed to a joke when it talks about something serious that I could see Zell doing?

The Prosportsdaily boards had a decent sized thread on it too.

Yeah, that guy sure pulled the wool over on us poor NSBB people. This multipage thread that was just started a few hours ago has been super busy spreading this glorified gossip columnists satire all over the world sure fell right into the author's master plan.

Oh wait, it's a one page thread with a small handful of posts and it's more than 10 days old?

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I applaud the outstanding effort, however. Pulitzer prize winner, indeed.

May I be the first to stand up and =D>

Afterall, we just got Punk'd.

must be another amber alert, cause someone is a bit touchy today, lol

It never stops being funny, even though the joke is now more than a year old. It would probably be even funnier if you responded to every one of my posts with that exact same post.

Keep up the good work!

jeez, you'd think somebody insulted roseanne or something
