Carroll at the Press Conference:

I don't see anything. I see a guy who is being honest about a disagreement and logically & calmly explaining the basis of that disagreement. He also mentioned he wishes Sanchez well.

There's nothing here worth noting, in my view.

i don't think that's the proper time and place to express your disagreement with his decision. not to mention saying that guys who come out early fail more often than not.

In related news (in only that he send more players to the NFL draft than nearly any other position coach), Larry Johnson, Sr. decides to stay put at Penn State over an offer to be Defensive Coordinator at Illinois.

Sucks to be Illinois. You offer a guy more money and responsibility but he turns you down to man the same position he has for the past 13 years. Maybe Joe ponied up and promised him the keys in a year or two. Say what you will about the old man, but he has some kind of Jedi mind tricks he uses to keep coaches around.

Seriously though, is there a more successful position coach in America?

he's amazing, and the best recruiter at the school. too bad his son his a total douche

I think it's absurd that he's talking about him coming out early and going against the NFL's wishes. He's passing on his 5th year of eligibility, is he not? This isn't Maurice Clarett.

Leinert stayed forever and that didn't seem to help him at all. He's whining about a kid going pro while standing in front of a sponsors logo.

It's true, Leinart stayed and he's still sitting the bench. It just sounded like that writer was saying Carrol's pouting like a child. I don't see that. I guess I can understand this isn't the time or place for those comments.

that's my thoughts as well. clearly he's pissed, but that press conference should be more about mark sanchez not the disgruntled coach who disagrees with the decision. i'm also curious to know what carroll found out by talking to nfl people that was ignored by sanchez in making this decision. most of the draft stuff i've read has sanchez as a top 3 quarterback, regardless if he's leaving school early.

Yeah, the only thing that would justify his reaction was if he was convinced Sanchez would drop to the 3rd round or something.

I just can't picture Sanchez lasting till the Bears pick. If he was there, the Bears better grab him.

Even if he would be there, the Bears aren't going to take him. You've been a Bears fan long enough to know that.

he'll drop to the Bears pick, Angelo will panic, trade down, and take a DB from a Division NAIA school

I dont get what Carroll did. How many times have you heard a coach publicly state his disagreement with a player leaving early. And its not like USC isnt going to have more guys as talented as Sanchez leave early.

when's pete carroll going to say at press conference for a returning player that the guy is making the wrong decision because he would probably be a top 10 pick, and if he gets hurt or is less effective next year, he'll be costing himself millions of dollars? i'm not going to hold my breath for that to happen.

Have you ever heard a coach say anything like that before? Out of respect to your player you're supposed to say "he's a great kid, he did a great job here, we're obviously going to miss him, I wish the best for him." You don't go on and on about the success rates of quarterbacks and why you think he's making a mistake. That not only made him look like an ass, but it could also make potential QB recruits think twice about going to USC.

also, i wonder if this does anything to carroll's reputation as coach who gets players prepared to play in the nfl. he's undercutting one of his highest profile players in a really embarrassing fashion.

It was easily one of the most awkward press conferences ever to announce a player's decision to go pro. After Sanchez, dressed in a suit, announced he would be entering the NFL draft to a silent Heritage Hall crowd, Carroll took the microphone and proceeded list the reasons Sanchez made the wrong decision for five or so minutes.

All the while, Sanchez sat five feet to Carroll's left, awkwardly smiling as his coach failed to fully support his decision. Watching Carroll list the statistics Sanchez had to overcome was like watching a best man giving a toast at a wedding and listing the reasons the marriage was doomed to fail instead of simply offering congratulations and well wishes.

It was a sad display for the usually gregarious Carroll, who spoke of Sanchez as a statistic rather than a person and a player he's known for five years. If that's what Carroll has to say about Sanchez in front of the cameras, I'd hate to hear what he's going to say about him behind closed doors when NFL scouts and general managers start calling him.

Yeah this is a lot bigger than people might think. He recruited D-Will, Royster, Butler, Odrick, Maybin and others on this year's team. He's a valuable asset and it would've really hurt to lose him, especially to someone else in the conference.

Oh God, Vic and Hartman don't count as media. Petros should be fun, he's always willing to rip USC (esp. Bush and Leinart) even though he went to USC.

Petros was awesome, totally ripped on Petey. They even had Carroll on the show and Carroll would not back down from his stance and said he wanted all his current players and recruits to know the truth and the situation (??).

By the way, Carroll's on web site had a few stories about how Mark Sanchez made a mistake. What the hell?

CNNsi.com and ESPN both have mock drafts out. Mel Kiper's on ESPN only has 1-16 available for free. The entire round is on Insider. Someone tell me who he has picked for the Bears please.

On tv, they showed that he had Tyson Jackson (DE-LSU) going to the Bears.

Brandon Pettigrew number 11? For a TE?

Yeah, Pettigrew shouldn't go that high.

Tyson Jackson isn't a bad pick, especially with Orakpo and Brown gone. But if Oher was available, I'd have taken him (Oher hadn't gone by 16).
