Why on earth did OSU's WR Brian Hartline go pro? He might not even get drafted

With Terrelle Pryor as the QB full-time next year, Hartline may not get many opportunities to catch footballs.

This may be the highest his stock will be.

Maybe he wasn't so big on Sanchez jumping after all.

Well he certainly wasn't. I didn't watch the conference but from what I've gathered, Carroll went on about how Sanchez wasn't maximizing the opportunities that he has been given (since he hasn't started much in college so the NFL is guessing as to his ability). He also said that the failure rate was very high for QBs who leave early fail. All right after Mark thanked everyone at USC.

Wow, interesting. I never would have pictured Carrol as the type of guy to sabotage his own players' professional aspirations. The whole USC system seems to be about giving us 2 years and then go pro because we're stacked as a mofo.

Maybe he's scared to death the Bears will take him and ruin the reputation of all USC QBs.

It's not like sticking around helped Leinert at all.

I just can't picture Sanchez lasting till the Bears pick. If he was there, the Bears better grab him.

I'd prefer Sanchez obviously, but what happened with the Leftwich talks?

Has there been any opinion on Nate Davis' decision here? I found that a little strange after his awful performance in the bowl game. Didn't watch much of it so I don't know if it was him or something else, but that's not the game you'd like to go out on when you're turning pro early.

He has a decent chance of being a first-day pick this year, especially with his strong and accurate arm. Next year's QB class looks to be much better. He stands to make more money leaving now, even with his underwhelming last two games as a collegian.

And of course, you never know what could happen a year from now, but right now there are a lot of teams that look to have open starting positions for 2009 and Davis has a good shot of playing early.

I would say he has a much higher chance than decent now that Bradford is staying. That makes him the third highest rated QB by Scouts Inc. and most other draft sites/experts. Him, Sanchez, Stafford and Freeman are really the only ones who are considered possible franchise QB's and with all the teams needing one I can't see how all four aren't drafted in the first two rounds.

Rhett Bomar is a very interesting sleeper in this draft. He won't be one of the first QBs taken (unless the combine vaults him up like crazy), but he might be the most talented of them all.

Someone is likely to get a great deal in the 3rd or 4th round.

USC coach Pete Carroll was extremely ungracious during the Mark Sanchez press conference. He stormed out of the room and did not even sit at the table before Sanchez addressed the media. Something he never did when Matt Leinart, etc., announced their decisions.

Carroll never sat down at the table but stood with his palms on the table. His anger was clear if you spend time around him.

Not a great moment.

You know that Scott Wolif has a huge axe to grind with the program. He's a [expletive] stirrer in the Mariotti vein.

Well, half the posters at WeareSC.com seemed to think Carroll was way out of line. Carroll's reaction is THE story in the local sports media.

I keep hearing Wolf has some sort of grind to pick but he's probably too busy oggling Pac-10 cheerleaders to do any actual work.

The local sports media? You mean Wolf, Vic, and Hartman. Big whoop.

I'm a little surprised at the candor Carroll's shown but i don't think it's anything egregious.

Oh God, Vic and Hartman don't count as media. Petros should be fun, he's always willing to rip USC (esp. Bush and Leinart) even though he went to USC.

There's quite a bit of anger being expressed within the athletic dept. at the highest levels right now regarding Mark Sanchez's departure.

I'm getting the feeling Mark Sanchez will not be honored at any functions in the near future.

I do not understand how any college athletic department or coach could be upset with a likely 1st round pick forgoing his 5th year of eligibility for the draft.

Remember Scott Wolf's scoops that said Lendwhale received a positive drug test the night before the draft (didn't exist) or that C.J. Spiller verbally committed to USC (went to Clemson). The guy is a hack who spews meaningless pablum for a dead paper. He's probably annoyed that he's outranked by luminaries such as Bill Plaschke and TJ Simers.

That and the kid already has his degree. I'm sure a lot of us would choose to play another year, but I can never question a kid who has already graduated to test the professional waters. And, like you say, his stock won't go higher.

In related news (in only that he send more players to the NFL draft than nearly any other position coach), Larry Johnson, Sr. decides to stay put at Penn State over an offer to be Defensive Coordinator at Illinois.

Sucks to be Illinois. You offer a guy more money and responsibility but he turns you down to man the same position he has for the past 13 years. Maybe Joe ponied up and promised him the keys in a year or two. Say what you will about the old man, but he has some kind of Jedi mind tricks he uses to keep coaches around.

Seriously though, is there a more successful position coach in America?

Only with you, Truffle, only you I act like that. But unlike Carroll, I can admit to be a dbag.

Eh, there was approximately a 0% chance you were going to disagree anything Scott Wolf wrote if it had a negative slant. I doubt you've ever read him (and there's nothing wrong with that, it's not like I read Penn State's beat writer) but I'm not exaggerating when I say he really is a Mariotti-type.

Carroll at the Press Conference:

I don't see anything. I see a guy who is being honest about a disagreement and logically & calmly explaining the basis of that disagreement. He also mentioned he wishes Sanchez well.

There's nothing here worth noting, in my view.

I think it's absurd that he's talking about him coming out early and going against the NFL's wishes. He's passing on his 5th year of eligibility, is he not? This isn't Maurice Clarett.

Leinert stayed forever and that didn't seem to help him at all. He's whining about a kid going pro while standing in front of a sponsors logo.
