With Tait's money off the books, I'd throw a boatload at Haynesworth. You can then ignore defensive end, because Brown and the rest of the gang will have plenty of opportunity to rush the passer. The draft can then be all about the offense, emphasizing line help.

Adding him to the Bears defense could vault them back into the top of the league.

You can't ignore DE. Brown, Ogunleye, and Anderson are all unrestricted FAs after 2009. You gotta get another guy regardless. You can maybe wait until the 3rd round, but you can't ignore DE.

I would never dismiss Haynesworth because he's been amazing, but I'm worried about the fact that he's been having his best years as his contract was closing out, and he's been through injuries before that sidelined him for quite awhile. It would depend on how much he can command.

If he doesn't end up as the top paid defensive player in the league, he'll be really close. Jared Allen is currently the highest paid defensive player, and is making (I believe) right around $12 million a year.

As for the injuries, he'll have a minor one every game (pretty much) that puts him out for a play or two. He'll also miss a few games a year, but he's never played less than 10 in a season and he averages 13 a year. Good Albert for 13 games is better than any DT in the game for 16.

The question I struggle with is whether he'll put forth maximum effort after getting a massive long term contract. He's always been rather immature (even back in his UT days), but stomping on Andre Gurode's head seemed to be a turning point for him. He came back from that suspension vowing that he'd be more mature and responsible. Since then, he's been more consistent and dependable than I've ever seen. I think he'll be fine, but it's not a guarantee.

Ultimately I think the Titans will re-sign him (all signs point to that), but he'd be a great addition to any team.

Well, I didn't mean completely ignore. What I meant was you don't have to worry about drafting one early, and really, you wouldn't have to worry about having any top notch guys out there. Those two DT would make any mediocre end look good. I wouldn't even take one in the third this year. You can always resign one of those guys next year, then draft one in the 2010 offseason. Spending that much cap space on dtackles means you are counting on them for being the difference makers on the line.

So you are worried that he got better after his first couple years in the league? He's been a pro bowler at 26/27. If you sign him, you can be pretty certain you're going to get great performance for the next 3 years, from 28-30, and even if he starts to decline in his early 30's, you can get your money's worth, and cut him down the road if need be.

I think you are underestimating how quickly and sharply defensive linemen can age in this league.

I think you are letting the Tommie Harris situation clowd your thinking. I fully expect him to start declining in his early 30's, but there's no reason he can't go through the next 3-4 seasons performing at a top notch level. The best of the best typically stay that way for a while. You will see d-ends come and go with fluke sack totals, but a great d-tackle should be able to remain great for a good deal of time. They aren't running backs.

Albert will test free agency. This is bad news for the Titans.

What the heck do you think we've been talking about since yesterday?

I hadn't heard this til just now. And it's not like people in this thread haven't been talking about interest in Albert before yesterday.

the link is at the top of this page.

Ah, sorry. I read the post but didn't click the link, assuming it would be on Tait retiring.

I'm just giving you a hard time. But seriously, with Tait's ~$5m coming off the books, the Bears have a great opportunity to take advantage of an unexpected increase in cap space.

Yeah, Haynesworth will be a great signing for whoever gets him. I still think the Titans will (and should) shell out the cash for him, but I'm a bit more worried about it now.

Albert and a healthy Tommie Harris would be really nasty in the middle of a dline.

I don't see anything about Haynesworth's past that would make me more concerned about injuries than most other NFL players.

No, I'm worried that he's a 7 year vet, and 5 of those years didn't have the level of dominance of the last two, and particularly last season. It's legitimate to ask whether he just improved after all that time, or whether he realized his contract was coming due.

I'm not saying it's 100%, but it should certainly not escape any level of scrutiny.

If you wanted Max Starks before today, I really doubt you'll want him now.

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Max Starks received the team's franchise tag Thursday -- even though he isn't guaranteed a job as a starter.

Any team wishing to sign Starks would have to surrender two first-round draft picks, but the Steelers would have seven days to match any offer and, thus, keep him.

I'm still drooling at the possibility of Oher or Vontae Davis on the board when the Bears are picking.

If they took Vontae Davis over Maclin I think I'd lose my [expletive] mind.

Would it be more or less painful than seeing Illinois in the Rose Bowl?

Probably more. And I'd only be mad because we don't need a CB in the first round, not because Davis isn't good.

Not sure Maclin will be there. Is he a good kid? I don't want another drama queen like David Terrell.
