With a whimper, the Grossman era will end today:

A once promising QB will leave Chicago bitter and hated.

what a sad story. it's particularly sad because people like me envisioned grossman being the savior of the franchise and stuck to him even when the detractors were at their worst. the game never slowed down for him, he would be well-served to learn how to move when the pocket collapses or where to step to avoid the pass rush. he's always had the arm. i wish him good luck.

I backed him long after most people gave up on him too. I really feel the fans & media jumped on Rex too soon, and too hard. Though I understand players need to be able to handle it, I can't help but feel on a different team, with less media scrutiny and better coaching, Rex's career would have turned out differently. I still believe he has one of the best NFL arms we've seen in this town in the past 20 years.

Injuries really hurt him early in his career. And that's really what lessened the fans' patience. When he did finally play he showed more promise than any QB in Bears history, and was among the best in the league for a while in 06. Then he hit rock bottom so hard and so often. The combination of these things did Rex in with Chicago fans.

Any interest in any of the forner TB Bucs? Warrick Dunn might be a nice spare part to split time with Forte. I assume Brooks is finished or wants too much money.

I'd say his total lack of ability to play as a starter in the NFL probably did him in more.

Considering the fact that he did play as a starter and enjoyed a fair amount of success would seem to contradict your theory.

You mean before defenses had a chance to get some tape of him and realized he lacked any sort of poise in the pocket and made horrific decisions at an alarming rate? Yeah he was pretty effective then.

That Rex is never going to come back. He's simply not good enough to be anything more than a stopgap solution on an NFL team.

Yeah, I understand that Rex isn't coming back, but I was contradicting your comment that he had a total lack of ability to play as a starter, when it was very clear that he did have the ability to play as a starter because he did play as a starter for a fair amount of time and enjoyed a moderate level of success doing so.

The dude made millions playing football for several years, and played in the Super Bowl. I don't think there's much of anything sad about this story.

not sad for him, sad for those of us who had high hopes for him.

I had no hopes for him when he was drafted, then slowly turned to being a fan and wound up as one of the people who most defended him in 2006/07. But I guess it was the lack of initial expectations that made it easier for me to let it go.

i thought he had the best arm of anyone in that draft. i guess somewhere my hopes got unrealistic, but that happens when you haven't seen a real qb play in your town ever.

Grossman did have the best realease and one of the best arms in that draft, and coming out of college was thought of as someone who could move in the pocket well

of courrse Chicago never had a o-line that could create a pocket worth a damn

I'll never understand why Rex simply stopped moving after his injuries. Before those, he would actually move around pretty good, even take off and run. Afterwards, statue.

A short statue is going to have trouble succeeding in the NFL, regardless of the quality of his arm.

It's neither. Brooks still has gas left in the tank but he needs to find a team that currently plays the Tampa 2 defense. With Jim Bates as the new DC at Tampa, and they want to get bigger on both the OL and LBer, Brooks simply doesn't have a spot (I think TB is nuts, but oh well) on their team. I could see team like Philadelphia signing Brooks.

Dont start this crap again. Sponge tried arguing with me about this earlier in the year. Rex was not a wasted pick. Period. And they don't make it to the Super Bowl without him.

I can't find it online yet, but just saw on the Mike & Mike show (while channel surfing) that Haynesworth signed with Washington for 7/$100M.

This just a few hours after this tidbit from Rotoworld:

Redskins GM Vinny Cerrato told an agent early Friday that Washington is no longer in the running for free agent Albert Haynesworth.

SI.com's Peter King says Cerrato has deemed Haynesworth "too expensive." Instead, Washington will likely try to get Chris Canty under contract pronto.
