Can anyone tell me how this guy is worth more than 20 million per season? I just dont see the hype on this guy, they're paying him as if he's pujols. I dont see this size of a contract being worth it for a good but not great player. Suddenly Soriano's contract doesnt seem as bad. I will be laughing it Texeira ends up like Giambi.

Baseball's salary system is a freaking joke. I don't even care if the Yankees don't make the playoffs or win the World Series. Something needs to be done about this. I know I'll get some "look at the Rays" posts. Let me know when the Rays make the playoffs 10 years in a row. Never going to happen unless they open the checkbook to resign all of their guys.

Can't we at least have a fake salary cap/floor. Like $180 million cap and $60 million dollar floor?

I haven't been following real closely. Was this the largest offer, or did he spurn someone else (Nats, Orioles) to go to NY?

Looks like he spurned the Sox, I think they had a higher offer, but the details really aren't out yet.

Meh, we've seen pretty clearly lately that its not how much money you spend, but how well you've spent it. Just look at the two teams that had to pay luxury taxes this year...the Yanks and the Tigers didn't even come close to making the playoffs. And the two WS teams, the Rays and the Phils superstars were all homegrown.

im just tired of watching the yankees on espn all day, and then watching 50% of their games televised ON ESPN...

Baseball won't have a salary cap/floor because its good for the MLB if the Red Sox/Yanks buy all their talent and make the playoffs every year

Yeah, Selig's never gonna do anything.

This is ridiculous, but if we ever have an owner that cares enough to do something like this, I don't want the league imposing rules that keeps them from doing so.

Besides, isn't even more funny when they buy all these players and still don't win?

the owner isn't the problem, it's the MLBPA. they're powerful and they will not let a salary cap be put into place.

It seems that every year since the A Rod aquisition, the Yankees make that move or moves that make the baseball world think wow, now they'll be unbeatable, and every year, they end up being quite beatable, so we'll see what happens.

If you got the money spend it. I have no problems with the yanks and they do put themselves in position for a run virtually every year. What fan wouldn't want that?

They have the Onion blocked at work, but this reminds me of the old headline that was something like "Yankee's sign every player in MLB"

I presume you are looking for a new job?

I can't find that one, but I found a better one that I can't even link because of a word in the headline :(

I think that trend started with the Mike Mussina acquisition. Adding a Cy Young contending pitcher to the team that won 3 consecutive World Series. Then it was the Giambi signing, adding an MVP to a 4 time AL champ.

And this really just shows you how hard it is to predict the playoffs. The Yankees just had a "bad" season where they won 89 games, which was the best the Cubs had done in the Hendry era prior to this season. I'd take their 2000s over the Cubs' 2000s in a heartbeat.
