The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles turned down a proposed Khalil Greene-for-Garrett Olson trade.

The Padres are pretty serious about moving Greene if Olson is all they wanted. Maybe the Orioles were right not to jump -- Greene is under control for just one year and the team isn't going to contend next season -- but Olson has been a real disappointment and hardly seems like a high price to pay.

Surely we can offer something better than Olsen, right?

If you took Sean Penn, and like inflated his nose so it was about double the size, and then gave him Robin Wright Penn's hair, I'm pretty sure you'd get Khalil Greene.

Veal for Greene

why would you trade veal for lifetime .248 hitter who hit .213 last year, dont we have Cedeno already? I understand why people think Greene is an upgrade over Theriot, i hate theriot and i still think he's better than Greene. If you are going to look for an upgrade over theriot, than think about Furcal, Renteria, Tejada, Philips, etc before thinking about Greene.

There's no reason to think he's not at this point.

PMR has Greene as the 5th worst defensive SS in the game last year, rating 94.64(100 is average). Theriot was 24th of the 39 at 100.17.

Out of curiosity, is this consistent with his career ratings? I remember being told that Greene was the best defensive SS in baseball last offseason. Is there a reason beyond baseball for his dropoff across the board last season?

Don't the #s tell a different story?

By PMR, Greene was 106.02 for 4th out of 37 SS in 2006, 99.28 for 21st of 39 in 2007(Theriot was 20th at 99.32), and 94.64 for 35th of 39 in 2008(Theriot was 24th at 100.17).

This guy blows. Just what I want a power hitting SS who really isn't that much of a power hitter, strikes out all the time, and hits in the low .200s. He can't do anything small ball like move the runners over or anything like that, plus he isn't a good fielder. Why do any of you possibly want this ugly looking jackass? This was like his fourth year in the bigs, and he has only gotten worse. He went from a fan favorite in San Diego to a nobody. I had the pleasure of watching him go 0-4 with 4 K's last year at Petco. He struck out to end the game, and the whole crowd booed him. You can say what you want about Theriot, but at least the guy puts the ball in play. We already have enough strike out victims on this team. (Soriano, DeRosa, Lee, Soto) This guy won't help us at all.

Wow.

There's so much...

I mean...

The delusion...

Wow.

Where to begin?

I'm not really sure what happened to Greene in 2008, but Greene had more HR's in 2007 than Theriot had XBH's in 2008.

Defensively, there isn't anyone I'd rather have at SS in the major leagues than Khalil Greene.

I'm not really sure how to feel about him after his disastrous '07 campaign. But, I'd rather have Greene than Theriot.

a lot of people, myself included, said that last offseason and if we had actually swapped the two, the anger around here throughout the season would have been incredible

This is true. The scary thing to me is that I honestly don't think Theriot can maintain anything close to the AVG he put up in '08, and when you couple that in with the extremely low number of XBH's and his poor range defensively, you end up with one of the worst SS's in MLB.

I watched a lot of games. It seems like most of Theriot's hits are seeing eye single's that were just out of the reach of an infielder and usually the 2b.

I guess if the only way to get Peavy were to also take Greene, I'd make that deal. Otherwise, I doubt Hendry really has much interest in Greene considering he's not a lefty outfielder.

It's just as delusional to think that Greene and his salary are the solution to any of the Cubs problems.

I would only take him as a throw in to a Peavy trade that included Theriot. Even then I am not so sure I would rather have him as the starting SS over Cedeno.
