According to the Houston Chronicle, there are rumblings about the need to cut payroll in Houston and that Valverde could be a casualty.

Link.

My guess is the Astros would not want to trade him to us, but he could fill the closer spot for one year nicely. That would then slide Gregg to the seventh inning and Marmol back to his usual high leverage situations.

Thoughts?

Seems moot because I just can't imagine Houston trading him to us.

Probably true, but I figured it was worth discussing.

No doubt. I don't know if I'd want him even if he were available though. Seems like a real headcase and we are already meeting our headcase quota on the team.

He wasn't really all that much better than Gregg was last year anyways. Valverde: 3.38 ERA, 126 ERA+. Gregg: 3.41 ERA, 125 ERA+. Valverde's K:BB ratio is much, much better than Gregg's though. However, Valverde did give up three times as many HR as Gregg.

I hate Valverde a lot. Enough to not want him on my team, no matter how good he is.

seconded

I think I hate him more than any other baseball player.

Valverde rules. While it's not practical for the Cubs to get him, his antics entertain me to no end.

Seconded.

Even if he goes down, he goes down in flames. It's great. I'd love him on the Cubs.

It's hard for me to get worked up about pitchers antics when watching Zambrano start 30+ games a year as a Cub fan. Valverde will cost us tradable assets something the Cubs don't have a lot of. It would require a trade within the div. Valverde makes close to $5 million next season . Would Hoffman take $5-6 million with to close for a contender? Would Wood Sign this cheap?

Valverde has great enough stuff and a deceptive enough delivery he should be a Top 5 closer easily, but he never will be. He's a buffoon. I think they let him out of the same mental hospital as Vicente Padilla. He has got the most ridiculous choreography on a baseball mound I've ever seen, I think. What does he do after he gets a save? He like draws a cross with his hand in mid-air or some BS. I've seen less elaborate posturing from pro wrestlers.

I hate him as an opponent, but he'd be a fan favorite.

Thank you. It's like people have already forgotten about Edmonds.

Edmonds still sucks

No, he just sucks again, because he no longer wears a Cub uniform. And is 87 years old.

Don't sell him short. He sucked with the cubs. Objective reasoning be damned in this case.
