you can do whatever you want. just seems that youre looking for something to argue about. constantly.

And now you know why 75% of the board has him on ignore.

Did you even read the thread or are you just trying to be a dick?

So I question why somebody says they're giving Vitters no chance at being great, and suddenly I'm just arguing for the sake of arguing and I'm being an ass or something. Okay, whatever. It's just a copout because he realized he said something that didn't make sense, so he tries to make it into me being a douchebag or something instead of talking about that.

I'd say the people who have me on ignore are probably people who have said dumbass things. Sorry if you're one of those people.

Padres Projecting Over Budget

According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres have a meager $40MM budget for players this year. They're projecting to be about $4-5MM over, and they'll probably have to trade Jake Peavy and/or Brian Giles at some point to meet the target. Both players have full no-trade rights.

It could be risky to wait on a Peavy trade, since an injury can happen anytime and he might pitch in the WBC. If the new Cubs ownership group will approve Peavy's addition to the 2010 budget, trade talks could reignite. I don't see why Opening Day has to be the arbitrary deadline to trade Peavy - maybe we'll see a rare April blockbuster if the Padres and Cubs' ownership situations necessitate it.

Was there any verification other than the WSJ that the Cubs were going to announce the winning bidder this week?

Hopefully this guy is right:

Lee Hamilton reported on MLB Live Late Edition on Monday night that the Cubs and Padres have renewed trade talks for Peavy according to his sources. He said the Padres must "get pitching back for Peavy" and he is hearing Sean Marshall, Garrett Olson, Kevin Hart and Jeff Stevens to San Diego for Peavy. He said Josh Vitters may not be involved and his sources said the Cubs pulled out the first time because they do not want to trade Josh Vitters.

I would have put more stock into what that guy said if he didn't throw out that really unrealistic sounding supposed deal. I can't imagine Vitters not being involved... and if he's not deal would be a lot bette than those 4.

That's awesome if we can keep Vitters. Don't see how that package is enough though.

If I'm arguing, then most internet message board stuff is arguing. You just need to stop getting so defensive because you're getting flustered at people questioning you.

i'm not getting defensive or flustered at all, what are you talking about?

We were just having a discussion and then you got all defensive and start talking about me just wanting to argue. Why? Becuase I replied to a post I didn't agree with? Isn't that what internet message boards are for? To discuss and debate things? Whatever, I don't even care. You'r right. Vitters has no chance to be great and he sucked ass last year.

the bolded part is why i say youre just looking to argue.

No kidding. I would take back my criticism of Hendry to this point if he can pull that deal off. Only worry would be who is going to fill in for Harden/Peavy or Zambrano if they get hurt.

"I have had no discussions with the Cubs or any other club about Peavy since the winter meetings, so there is really nothing to update," Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said via e-mail last night. "Our position remains the same. We are not pursuing other clubs about potentially moving Jake and nobody has contacted us either since the winter meetings."

"Obviously, we took note of the trade that took place (Sunday)," Axelrod said Monday, en route to an appointment with Peavy. "You would certainly not be out of line to surmise from all of (the Cubs' moves) that they might be working toward something. But I haven't heard a word that anything is different."

"I think too much is being made of the Chicago/Baltimore trade as it might relate to us," Padres CEO Sandy Alderson said Monday. "Chicago had a crowded outfield, probably needed to move Pie, had limited interest in him among other clubs and knew what Baltimore would give up from the earlier discussions with us."

Thus in the absence of a clear agenda or financial commitment from aspiring owner Jeff Moorad, Peavy appears too pricey for the Padres.

Dealing Brian Giles and his $9 million salary could also bring the club under budget, but the outfielder's mobility is complicated by his own trade veto rights and by recent allegations of domestic abuse stemming from an unsettled palimony suit.

With their two highest-paid players empowered to decline a trade, and Giles bearing additional baggage, the Padres would seem poorly positioned to wait for a mid-season deal to balance their budget. That position is made more daunting by the risk of Peavy injuring himself in the line of duty.

Padres Projecting Over Budget

By Tim Dierkes [January 20 at 8:29am CST]

They're projecting to be about $4-5MM over, and they'll probably have to trade Jake Peavy and/or Brian Giles at some point to meet the target. Both players have full no-trade rights.

It could be risky to wait on a Peavy trade, since an injury can happen anytime and he might pitch in the WBC. If the new Cubs ownership group will approve Peavy's addition to the 2010 budget, trade talks could reignite (hasn't happened yet). I don't see why Opening Day has to be the arbitrary deadline to trade Peavy - maybe we'll see a rare April blockbuster if the Padres and Cubs' ownership situations necessitate it. Regarding the Felix Pie-Garrett Olson trade as a precursor, Padres CEO Sandy Alderson says too much is being made of it.

Interesting. Giles has made it clear that he wont waive his NTC, do if Peavy really wants to be a CUb, he could really have Towers where he wants him.

Trading for Peavy would be a monumental moment for the Cubs. Today would be the ideal day to make a monumental trade. Let's steal some of Obama's thunder.

That will teach him for being a White Sox fan.

the padres gm/ceo/whoever can deny it all they want, but there's no way that hendry is just acquiring all these pieces for the hell of it. he obviously understood the roadblock to the trade at the meetings. you dont think that towers said "if you can get these guys and send them to me you've got a deal?" of course he did.

None of the guys we've gotten really seem like the kind of guys Towers would want for Peavy.

The only move that is even marginal on its own is DeRosa. The others make perfect sense on their own.

Huh? Isn't Olson a name that Towers has had rumored interest in for a while, aside from being one of the more prominently mentioned names in the deals that never were a month and a half ago?

yes. they supposedly offered Khalil Greene for him straight up

And once again, its looking like the Padres are going to have to move Peavy to make their budget number. Girlfriend-beater isn't going anywhere. With Peavy limiting the teams he'll go to (possibly even to just us at this point), he doesn't have all that much trade value.
Posted
During the Winter Meetings they said the Cubs don't have the pitching prospects needed to make the trade so a 3rd or 4th team would have to be involved. The Cubs got those pitching prospects in the DERO trade. I'm sure Towers told him he likes those prospects. They also said they want Olson from the Orioles. They got him as well. Now all we have to do is add the initial parts and we get him. ie Vitters, Cedeno, Hart

Presumably they want good pitching. All we acquired was minor-league dross no better than what we already had.

They want young, cheap pitching. a 25 year old with the stuff is something that a good pitching coach can work with. Best case scenerio, they make a quality pitcher out of a prospect. Worse case scenerio, they still have Peavus money off the books so they can finally attempt to build a team.
