O's could be getting Marquis --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As usual read as little or as much into this as you want. Here's the deal I was told that was on the table to the Cubs:

Cubs get Peavy from SD

Orioles get Pie, Marquis + 4 million cash from CHI

Phillies get Derosa from CHI

SD gets Hill, Vitters, Cedeno from CHI, Olson form Bal, Happ from PHI

I have trouble believing we're giving up 6 players to get Peavy, leaving us with possible holes at 2B, sub MI, and RF plus giving up our top prospect. I would still like to get another usable piece in this trade, i.e. Scott from the O's or Hairston from the Padres.

Anyone want to be the fourth to post the rumor? :D

I wouldn't worry about it. I strongly doubt that anyone will ask Hendry to give up six players to get one in return.

My personal hope is that by including DeRosa in the deal we can keep Vitters. I think that we can get a similar level of production from the combination of Fontenot and a potential Rule 5 pick like Jesus Guzman.

I really dont foresee a scenerio in which this trade goes down and Vitters isnt involved.

I am hoping that if we're giving DeRosa to the Phillies to get one guy the Pads want and Pie + Marquis to the O's to get another guy the Pads want that we can get this done without including Vitters.

But it's just hoping and looking at the value of the players involved.

Yeah, that's what i'm hoping too. There was the Guzman/Wuertz/Hart rumors, so i'm hoping it's one of them in place of Vitters if we're trading DeRosa.

1:10pm: Roman Modrowski of the Chicago Sun-Times says Peavy sang "Go Cubs, Go" at a Vegas bar last night. Good times. But did Roy Oswalt sing along? Also, Modrowski believes the Cubs would be willing to eat as much as $6MM of Marquis' $9.875MM.

If the ownership question is a deal breaker for Peavy over the next few years, why wouldn't it be for Bradley on a 3yr deal? That makes no sense to me. This sounds like some classic misinformation. Maybe Hendry doesn't like the deal as presented right now (maybe it is six players) and he's using the ownership issue to push Towers off his position. I just don't buy the argument that futruer ownership didn't have to be consulted for the Dempster deal and a potential Bradley deal, but they do for a Peavy deal - which is the only one of the thre where you are also shedding some salary in terms of guys like Marquis, DeRossa etc.

I'll stick with Bruce, thanks.

Obviously things can change, but another source also poured cold water on multiple national reports that they are seeking Phillies pitching prospect J.A. Happ. They are seeking young pitching from the Phillies as part of the many scenarios involving three or four teams in a trade that would place Jake Peavy with the Cubs.

Bruce on trading DeRosa:

http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/1086

All of them are in a big room at the Bellagio to meet. It's the one time they get together at the Winter Meetings to complete any business they didn't get done at the GM meetings.

Nolan Ryan is scheduled to meet with the media shortly. We'll see what he has to say and get something to you.

Lots of talk out here about Jake Peavy going to the Cubs and what C.C. Sabathia may do. I would think the Mets are going to sign K-Rod today or tomorrow, judging by all the talk.

Whoever is going to be owner better OK any move..Thats why I wanted Cuban to buy the team since money wouldn't be a factor and he'd go balls out and sign anyone..Any owner should know ahead that it's all about winning and they are expected from everyone to spend and do whatever it takes to win us a world series Edited by PrimeTime

I'm not so sure about trading DeRosa. He's been steady for enough years that I think it will continue. And I'm not convinced Fontenot would continue his production as a starter, where pitchers have a chance to dissect him more and he'll be facing more of the league's top starters rather than relievers.

I'm not saying I'd throw it out of the question. I would just be very careful with that. DeRosa as starter with Fonty coming in for spot duty is a good thing we have going.

I was under the impression that all potential owners knew and signed off (maybe not officially) on the payroll being between $140M-$150M

They did. Thats why I am not listening to anything Rosenthal or Stark says about the ownership situation.

If we're going to be eating 6 million for Marquis, maybe we should just keep him as insurance for Harden, Zambrano, and Peavy if/when they go down with an injury.

I'd still trade him if it meant Peavy, so long as we have a good platoon, but I agree about his production not dropping off. People forget that he made a pretty big change to his batting stance (I think it was either Michael Young or Ian Kinsler that helped him alot with it), and he's raked ever since that moment. I don't think it's a coincidence.

Yeah, plus use him out of the pen in long relief. Eating $4M seems more reasonable as it still clears $6M, but eating $6M seems crazy, especially if it doesn't hinder us signing someone like Bradley.

Remember when he cried and complained that he wouldn't accept anything other than being a starter? So that won't work

Im pretty sure ELCABALLO45 mentioned this like 10 posts before this... and no one thought it was funny then...

Theriot/Fonty platoon at second. Hendry can go get his leadoff hitter Furcal for SS and sign Bradley for right. Losing both Derosa and Marquis contracts along with reports of the payroll in the 145-150 is there enough room?

Haha, have you ever actually tried to do that in real life? You feel really stupid. But seriously, Jake Peavy sitting at a bar singing go cubs go, is kinda funny.

Yeah one of my buddies would always make that a rule in a drinking game in college--got tough.
