I was disappointed to see Eyre celebrating and laughing with one of the Phillies (Meyers? maybe?) who said something to the effect of " Suck on it Hendry" in the clubhouse after they won the WS. Eyer, of all people, knows that Hednry did all he could to trade him to a contender because he told him he would.

Actually it was Lou Piniella, and its wasn't "Suck it Lou" it was like "I wish Lou was here to see this" or something like that.

I'd probably hate Lou Piniella if I was Scott Eyre too.

Yeah. Damn him for trading Eyre to a team that won the World Series.

Damn him straight to hell!

Yes, because we all know that the reason they traded him was so he could win the World Series with another team

It was a sucky thing to do, but business is business. Eyre was the odd man out. Cotts and Marshall were his lefties out of the pen, both of whom had futures with the team. Eyre would have been gone after the season.

Towers hasn’t had a sitdown with Hendry yet, but said “he knows where to find me.” They are expected to meet Monday night.
Towers said he has the sense that Hendry “doesn’t want to drag this thing out,” though it’s already been dragged out for almost two months.

No, he was treasted unfairly and it was stupid for Lou to do it. He wasn't the odd man out of anything. He was better than Cotts. He was never given a chance in 2008, even though he proved with Philly that he could still be very valuable. Lou hated him for some reason and it hurt the team. If I were Scott Eyre I'd dislike Lou.

With Philly

14.3 IP

8 H

3 ER

3 BB

18 K

1.88 ERA

.77 WHIP

He was also great down the stretch in 2007. Lou just disliked him for some reason

The World Series champion Phillies are active on at least two fronts. They have shown interest in Twins' outfielder Delmon Young and also have emerged as a possible third team in the ongoing discussions between the Cubs and Padres regarding right-hander Jake Peavy.

The Padres like some of the Phillies' young minor-league pitchers, major-league sources say, but the talks are only in the preliminary stages.

The Cubs continue to seek a landing spot for right-hander Jason Marquis, whose $9.875 million salary would need to be cleared to create payroll flexibility for the addition of a left-handed hitter and/or Peavy.

No Peavy deal will be completed until the Cubs' new owner is decided, sources say. The new owner would need to approve the addition of Peavy, who is owed $63 million.

It's pretty clear nobody really knows what is going on with the ownership stuff, some reports say a Peavy trade has to be approved by a new owner and others say the sale has no influence on whether or not Peavy is traded, so I am going to take all reports on the sale affecting Peavy as a moot point, but the Phillies part is interesting. When it first came out a month or so ago about a third team I thought the Phillies might be a fit with Utley out for some time, Fontenot/Cedeno might be interesting targets for the Phillies to replace Utley, the Pads/Cubs could maybe send another prospect to the Phillies and they Phillies could then send Kendrick or Happ to the Padres to add in the pitching that is desired on their part.

Rosenthal would be wrong.

Isnt that conflicting with the report that they need him delt by Thursday? We all know that the ownership situation wont be done by then. Then again, there was no way that the Zambrano extension would happen before we had a new owner.

Hendry is damn good at acquiring the players he sets his sights on... usually at a low cost (whether in terms of money/years or talent).

LOL...WUT?

Yea I'm gonna have to say that's shenanigans. I feel like that problem would have been mentioned a long while ago and not just come up now.

I thought Bruce debunked that a few pages back. Am I remembering wrong?

Rosenthal is all over the freaking place right now.

If the Phils get Peavy I'm gonna be such a sad panda.

You feel we gave up too much for Harden, Ramirez, Barrett, Lee, whoever?

Unless I'm mistaken, he's referring to them as the third team in the same vein that the Oriole's have been referred to it as... simply as a facilitator.

Padres general manager Kevin Towers told FOXSports.com's Gerry Fraley earlier Monday that the team was only in talks with the Cubs.

"We should have a pretty good idea of where we are by Thursday," Towers said. "We should know if we could move on or drop it."

But the Phillies threw their name into the mix later Monday, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported. The Padres like some of the Phillies' young minor-league pitchers, major-league sources told Rosenthal, but the talks are only in the preliminary stages.

WTF!!?? Does that mean that the Phillies are the 3rd team in the 3way with the Cubs and Padres? Or does that mean that the Phillies are the ones trying to get Peavy??

He very obviously did extremely well in the Aramis, Lee, Nomar, and Harden trades. Z, Aramis, and Lee also signed long-term extensions for far less than they could have gotten on the open market. Dempster probably signed for less than he could have gotten on the open market (not that it makes it a good contract, but still). Fukudome signed for less than the top offer.

Soriano and Marquis are the only significant contracts he's signed that have been above market rate. And the only trade where he obviously gave up too much was the one for Juan Pierre.

Hendry is a good negotiator. I certainly don't agree with all of his moves, but he acquits himself well when players or GMs are sitting across the table from him.

I just asked Bruce if he could clarify if we needed new ownerships approval in his most recent blog, so hopefully he gets to that sometime tonight. Muchos Gracias Bruce.

How come everyone thinks that the Phillies entering means they would be the 3rd team in a 3 way with the cubs and pads? It seems like they are entering to get Peavy themselves. Even in Rosenthal's blog, under Peavy's pic it says something like "cubs and phillies both started talks with the padres about jake peavy." Phillies being the 3rd team involved in the discussions can easily just mean that the phillies are the only other team towers is talking to about peavy. 1) sd 2) chi 3) phi. Or it could mean that they are the 3rd team to be interested in peavy. 1) cubs 2) LAD 3) PHI. Cuz earlier today there was something about the Dodgers being the only other team peavy would want to go to. Maybe now the Phillies appeared on that list since they just won the WS.

Towers himself said that Peavy would only go to the Cubs or the Dodgers. It makes more sense based on everything that has been reported, that the Phillies are the third team in the deal.
